May we not be victims of tragic circumstances, how time flies. Imagine now that it is actually almost 17 years ago but it feels like yesterday. On 18th October, 2007, Lucky Dube, the biggest reggae music icon super star in South Africa on the planet was in an excited mood having a good time with his children. He had just dropped two of his 7 kids off at their uncle's house in Johannesburg.
All of a sudden, a gang of armed robbers attacked and killed him on the spot. He was driving his Chrysler 300C, which the assailants were after. Yes, they wanted to do a carjacking. Police reports suggest he was shot dead by carjackers who did not recognise him.
Five men were arrested in connection with the murder, three were tried and found guilty on 31 March 2009. Two of the men attempted to escape and were caught. Dube's convicted killers were sentenced to life in prison.
He is gone but his songs live with us forever. He was just 43 and till today, his death pains deeply. In his lyrics, Dube discussed issues affecting black people in general to a global audience. He recorded 22 albums in a 25-year period and was Africa's best-selling reggae artist of all time.
Dube wanted to leave a normal life at home like a citizen but the evil ones took his soul!
And by the way, which of Lucky Dube's songs do you know? The way it is, Back to my Roots, Crazy World, Prisoner, House of Exile…..
Personally my life in me Reggae music is my life, this music since my childhood was reggae at home. I always celebrate Lucky Dube left a huge legacy.
Much questions about his murder!
Rest well, legend!
