One of my favourite decisions for Low Key has been choosing reclaimed Northland tōtara for our communal table. Tōtara is one of New Zealand’s most iconic native timbers, prized for its beauty, strength and incredible durability. These days it’s carefully protected, so reclaimed tōtara gives existing timber a new life instead of relying on newly harvested native trees.

It felt like the perfect fit for Low Key—a beautiful piece of New Zealand history that will hopefully bring people together around great drinks and good conversation for many years to come.

Soon, we’ll be opening Low Key, a new cocktail bar, inspired by the idea that great hospitality is often found in the quieter moments. Good drinks. Good company. No fuss.

There’s still plenty to do before opening day, and we’ll be sharing the process as we transform the space, test ideas (cocktail tasting anyone?), geek out over glassware, and gradually bring Low Key to life.
