In 1865 the first Chinese miners arrived to dig for gold in the Otago goldfields ultimately establishing 25 communities in Central Otago and the West Coast. One of the most successful was Choie Sew Hoy who initiated innovations that led New Zealand to acquire a worldwide reputation.
