WELFARE TRIPS:
This RSA provides assistance to Veterans who require transport to specialist appointments. Unfortunately we only have a very small number of drivers so this service is not always available to other members, such as Associates.
When we can take an Associate member there is a fee to be paid.
This is notice that, effective immediately, the fee for transport for any member who is not a Veteran, will increase to $40 per trip. The current fee has been in place for well over 15 years so this increase is to cover rises throughout that time and of course the rise in fuel costs that everyone is currently experiencing.

POPPY DONATIONS:
Our total is now an awesome $10,017.70
On behalf of our Veterans and the RSA Poppy Trust, thank you to everyone for your support.

Hi everyone

A slightly quieter time in the Club this week, after Anzac Day and our commemorations.
But we enjoyed a good Saturday with our $2K draw. Congratulations to S. Johnson who took home the spoils.

This week’s update:

SUBS:
You can still pay your membership subs for the 2026/27 year.
Either call into the Club or pay on-line. Please contact the Club for bank details.

CONTACT DETAILS:
Don’t forget, if you shift or have any change in your address, either physical or email, don’t forget to let us know.

WALL:
The great wall discussion!
The committee and management have been having in-depth on-going discussions with MPDC staff and Mayor Ash Tanner over the RSA wall. These have been going for many months.
While many of the discussions are confidential, we are pleased to report that we are getting closer to a repair date.
We are hoping that work will start on removing the existing wall within the next month or so, so please be aware if anything changes around the club, in particular in regards to barriers, safety etc.
There will of course be some disruption around the Club, this is something that won’t be able to be avoided, but all parties will endeavour to minimise this.
Parking will be affected so please consider using the Courtesy van. Just ring the Club on the night to book.

SHEETS/BLANKETS:
With the impending removal of the existing wall, we will of course have to pull down the wire fence at the front of the Club, the one that holds our Poppies.
We are now looking for any old blankets or sheets that anyone may have at home, that we will be able to use to wrap the Poppies in so they don’t get scratched while they are in storage.
Just drop them into the Club when you are next passing.
Many thanks

A quiet surprise from Torty the 130+ year old tortoise 🐢

Yesterday on Anzac Day, we received this remarkable image from Torty’s family - the Littles. After several days buried away, ready for brumation, Torty unexpectedly emerged; awake on Anzac Day for the very first time. Her family say the unusual behaviour may be linked to shifting weather patterns.

Torty is regarded as Aotearoa New Zealand’s oldest living survivor of World War I, having been rescued by NZ soldier Stewart Little and brought home more than 100 years ago. Many have followed her story since she visited Te Papa last month, where she saw the Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War exhibition, and the replica of Torty that helps share her extraordinary journey.

A very special moment on a significant day. Torty’s rare appearance on Anzac Day offers a connection to a distant past, still present, still part of the story we continue to remember. Lest we forget.
