Keep up to date

You might get notifications from Microsoft or Epic Games, asking to update your software. These corporations probably aren't doing it to annoy you, but rather they want to protect your computer so that you can buy more vbucks.

Why so? Everytime Microsoft releases a new operating system/update, on top of glitzy new features, they are also improve general performance, stability and including security patches against new vulnerabilities found. Especially when they cease support for the particular OS ie Windows XP and Windows 7, that also means they are no longer providing any more security updates against future potential vulnerabilities. Hackers always look to exploit such vulnerabilities when executing attacks.

Don't be that guy.

Always remember to think twice before opening any URLs or attachments you find in a suspicious email, especially if you are on your company network/computer. Most cyber attacks start from a phishing email, stay vigilant and exhibit some critical thinking, it's not that hard.

Under Investigation

Some of you may have heard that the personal information of several SAF and MINDEF personnel could have been leaked by hackers. While this is a security breach, investigations are currently being carried out to assess the magnitude of the impact.

Meanwhile, we can all learn from this incident that everyone has a role to play in cybersecurity and having a firewall and antivirus is now the bare minimum. Be it staying vigilant while browsing, or sharing a sh*tty meme from this page, we all have a part to play.

Not a Bad Guy

In the past few years, the global demand for cybersecurity professionals have increased drastically, mainly due to the increase in the complexity and the number of cyber attacks and cyber crimes over the past decade.

Typically, one would need a bachelor's degree in Information Technology (IT) or Computing to start as a Cyber Security Analyst but having a Degree in a STEM field is acceptable as well. This is because many of the soft skills developed during the course of a STEM degree ie Analytical Thinking and Process management, are crucial in the job. The willingness to learn and ability to adapt to changes is also important as the cyber landscape is always evolving and changes at a rapid pace.

While challenging, this is an immensely rewarding career path and you are welcomed to join this vibrant and dynamic industry!

Free WiFi or Free entrance?

A Fake WAP (Wireless Access Point) attack is done by the hacker setting up a wireless router with a very legitimate looking name in a public area, with the intention of unsuspecting individuals connecting to it. Upon connecting to the WAP, the hacker is able to to access your private data and information and even take control of your device.

Fortunately, this attack is easily defended against. Firstly, switch off your device's wifi auto-connect function. Next, as much as possible, do not connect to any public WiFi, especially those without any password requirements. If you have to, make sure that you are connecting to the correct one. Finally, you can use a secure VPN when surfing the net. This post was not brought to you by NordVPN or RAID: SHADOW LEGENDS

Something's fishy

One of the easiest ways hackers gain your credentials is not by employing hackerman skills and furiously typing on their keyboard, but rather trick you into handing them your credentials on a silver platter.

Phishing websites are one of the most common ways to trick people eager to post selfies and memes and it's relatively easy to create a site that looks exactly like the real thing. What you do is to should look out for the URL which you are visiting before keying in your credentials. If unsure, simply access the site directly, rather than be directed to it via an URL in an email.
