According to Lee Ringelheim, owner of Manhattan's Soho Cigar Bar, "Ci**rs can contain touches of spice, chocolate, nuts, leather, and even impart vegetal traits." "Spice, black pepper, clove, to***co, along with sweet vanilla, caramel, chocolate, floral, rose, and honey, are some of the slightly similar notes that whiskey produces."

The key, though, is balance, much as with wine and food pairings. Neither should be allowed to dominate the other.
