We are sad to announce that Yemayá has closed as of May 7th. Whatever remains in that space is not in our control and will not be selling any of our cocktails or Aguas Frescas. Ariel Mario Tudela and Ross Harris were completely removed in a laughably dramatic fashion from Kinin with zero advance notification or prior communication. We have additionally been forbidden from ever going back to the space, with no just reasoning besides cruelty.
Just as we were preparing for the one year anniversary of this collective we were so proud to be part of, we were muscled out of the business with a forced buyout and debt cancellation that played out a lot like extortion. This happened only after we brought up discussing revisions for the terribly uneven mafia contract we had naively worked under for a year. We had concerns when signing the contract initially, but only with the clarity of a full year of operations and good record keeping did it become obvious that Yemayá was unsustainable as it was, and benefitting Kumbakha more than it would ever benefit Yemayá, no matter how high sales were.
They accused us of being lazy and we should up sales, which is ridiculous because drink sales were already consistently high and growing higher. Yemayá had well trained staff, artfully crafted and unique recipes and tight operations systems that made our fast drink service one of the more reliable and exciting parts of a visit to Kinin and Kumbhaka. We brought extensive knowledge from years in service and worked hard to create something beautiful here in Phnom Penh, with a group of people we thought were like-minded and trustworthy. Operations were tight, and I think we succeeded immensely! Did we make mistakes? Of course we did! But we have zero regrets, despite the very quick and harsh way it all crashed down.
Apologizes in advance for not keeping better contact lately and also for the negative tone in this post. It’s been rough! We’ve learned that real friends and partners communicate, real friends express their needs and desires, real friends don’t plot behind your back, real friends respect you even when they disagree, real friends are not cowards.
It was a wonderful year and we learned a lot. We plan to stick around Phnom Penh. We just got back recently from a spontaneous vacay to Siem Reap. Lots of biking and eating and swimming and venting. Fully relaxing after a very challenging couple of weeks.
Yemayá will be doing future pop up cocktail events in Phnom Penh, so stay tuned for some interesting projects we are brewing up!
Also we’re unemployed now! Any leads to writing, proofreading, editing, Chinese to English translation, tutoring type work would be appreciated. Just DM one of us. Kisses!
