Meet 25 year old Eldor Ogede from Benue State. She has been married for some years but has been unable to bear a child.

Her husband had an affair with another woman and she got pregnant and gave birth for him. When Eldor heard about it she was so heartbroken and she confronted her husband. The man didn't deny it but asked for her forgiveness.

Eldor later told her husband that he can bring his baby mama and child home so that all of them will stay together, the man was so excited about that. He went and brought them, even neighbors are pleased with what Eldor did, they were hailing her and telling her that the cry of that baby will bring forth her own baby.

One evening, the baby mama stepped out while her baby was sleeping. Eldor decided to execute her plan, she used a heavy stick and nack it on the bàby's head twice, the baby let out a loud scream before giving up.

Neighbors heard the aggressive loud scream of the baby and rushed to the house, as Eldor saw them approaching, she dropped the stick and started running, some people pursued her to know why she was running like that while others rushed to go and check the baby because they heard the cry once and didn't hear it again.

Unfortunately, the baby has already given up, that was when they started b3àtïñg this one mercilessly...chai!!! They beat her black and blue before handing her over to the police.

Your husband cheated on you, fine, he didn't do the right thing but instead of taking the life of this innocent baby, just to get back at him, why not leave 🤷

Court/Registry marriage.

But let me ask the question many people are afraid to ask:

Which of these marriages actually protects them the MOST under Nigerian law?

1. Traditional Marriage:

This is the marriage conducted according to the applicable custom of the couple.

It is legally significant and can create important rights and obligations, especially under customary law.

2. Registry/Court Marriage:

This is the big one legally.

A statutory marriage under the Marriage Act comes with strong legal protections and obligations, including restrictions on marrying another person while the statutory marriage subsists.

3. White Wedding/Church Blessing:

Beautiful, spiritual and meaningful, but the white wedding itself is not automatically a separate legal marriage simply because it happened in a church.

Its legal effect depends on how the marriage was conducted and whether the church was legally authorised to celebrate marriages.

So, did Jarvis and Peller really get married THREE times?

Not necessarily.

They may have had three ceremonies, but legally, those ceremonies do not necessarily create three separate marriages.

And if you ask me which one generally gives the strongest statutory protection?

The properly contracted Court marriage or statutory marriage under the Marriage Act.
