A Journey Through India, One Region at a Time
Srutilaya brings you a musical or dance piece from a different region of India every month- exploring the diverse artistic traditions, stories and histories that make up our cultural landscape.
We begin our journey in Karnataka, with a composition by Sri Gopala Dasaru, a revered 18th century saint-poet of the Haridasa tradition.
ಏಕೆ ಮಲಗಿಹೆ ಹರಿಯೆ, ಏನು ಆಯಾಸ?
Why are you asleep, O Hari? Just how tired could you be?
The composition takes the familiar image of Vishnu reclining upon Adishesha and turns it into a playful conversation between the devotee and deity. The devotee wonders aloud: after churning the ocean, lifting mountains, vanquishing demons, rescuing the earth and performing countless other divine deeds, has Hari finally become so exhausted that he has gone to sleep?
Gopala Dasaru playfully teases Hari for being asleep while his devotee waits for his attention.
“Eke Malagihe Hariye, Enu Ayasa?” by Sri Gopala Dasaru in the Raga Jog
