The word julep is French, borrowed from the Arabic julab, which is borrowed from the Persian golab — a drink of rose water and sweetness, traced back centuries before bourbon existed. Somewhere along the way, the rose became mint, American whiskey worked its way into the mix, and a ritual was born.

In 1938, the Mint Julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby — the Run for the Roses. One hundred and fifty thousand of them are served at Churchill Downs every year.
