Our classic cocktail of the week is another one that, like the Hemingway daiquiri, comes from a 20th century storyteller.
The Vesper, also known as the Vesper Martini, was invented by author Ian Fleming for his iconic hard-drinking MI6 agent, James Bond. The drink first appeared in Fleming's Casino Royale, which was published in 1953, the cocktail being named after the double agent (and the first woman to get under Bond’s skin) Vesper Lynd, who was, of course, memorably portrayed on the big screen by Eva Green.
When the exacting British agent orders the Vesper from the bartender, he provides strict instructions, leaving little ambiguity in how to prepare the cocktail: “A dry martini. One. Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.”
Yes, Mr Bond.
