Seems the local Tesco is out of Jim Beam tonight so, instead, am having a JD & Coke and raising a glass to the still very much missed Tom. It's now a staggering 10 years since we lost him. I can't believe how quickly the time has gone by and how much the world has changed since. Still wish you were here with us mate... :'(

Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy (The Nightshift Video Reconstruction)

Ok, originally, we were going to be using the standard version of this song that just kicks straight in - and it was sequenced later on the album. The previous track has got an ending that was perfect for incorporating more Dollhouse-dialogue over but we couldn't decide what. From the show, there's a particular conversation that we thought was amazing - a really f*&ked up scene where one character breaks up with another - and is (horribly and deliberately) brutal about it - but we'd already decided it was far too long-winded and just wouldn't fit anywhere so we'd scrapped it. Then, that weird, glitchy ending from the previous song reminded me of the opening of Chris Cunningham's Director's Cut of the video of this song - that takes *ages* before the song properly starts and, hoo momma, it all just fell together in my head. Tom spent 10 mins looking at me as if I was nuts while I ran around the house trying to find my Chris C DVD so I could rip the audio and try it out. A quick rough mix of the idea demonstrated to him and, he was 100% in. It all just fits, in a horribly f*&ked up way... :p

Aesthetic Perfection - The Ones

This was a verrry late addition that I discovered at the eleventh hour. I'm pretty sure we already had all the tracks chosen and were in the mixdown stage of the album and I think we dropped another track to make way for it (can't remember which one though). I remember playing it to Tom literally as soon as he walked through the door and, just 20 seconds in, he was going "It's in!" I rememember its' inclusion changed the order of the subsequent tracks and we had to really agonise and re-think over how to proceed from here as it just didn't work as it was...

Then, the really weird, glitchy, fuzzy and prolonged ending gave me an idea...

Depeche Mode - Rush

We had 3 versions of this to choose from, all that we felt were equally as good...

-- The album version from the 1993 album Songs of faith and devotion
-- A live version from the accompanying tour the following year
-- Or, a really good remix by Swindon's very own Jack Dangers, famous for his hugely-influential band MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO (official) (who used to have their studio just down the road from where I live).

In the end, we went with the original. I'm particularly chuffed with how it mixes in from the previous track.. :)

Nine Inch Nails - Only

This where we did our next little bit of Dollhouse-sampling. The bit at the beginning where Echo's voice repeats and, erm, echoes as it fades was Tom's idea. Mixing this in was really tricky and was all my work - it's a real hassle trying to isolate the background noise behind the voice... We were also adamant that this album had to feature a track by Lord Reznor himself - and were keen for it to not be an obvious more-popular song from Nine Inch Nails' earlier days. Amazing video for this, directed by David Fincher himself...

My choice again. KGC = 2 members of KMFDM + one member of my all-time fave band Curve. I thought this one might not be Tom's thing as it's a bit drum'n'bass-ey but, when I played it to him, the little breakdown exactly 1 minute in ensured his thumbs-up.
