Farewell, for now, from Ascapart Brewery

After just over a year of brewing adventure, we’re announcing the closure of Ascapart Brewery at Mettricks Portswood.

It’s a decision that hasn’t come lightly. In fact we’re a bit heartbroken. Despite our passion, creativity, and some incredibly tasty beers, the realities of running a small brewery and hospitality business in the UK in 2025 have become impossible to ignore.

Electricity rates are now over 4x higher than an equivalent brewery in the US and 40% higher than the EU average.
Alcohol duty remains stubbornly high.
Ingredients costs have continued to creep up.
Consolidation amongst the big craft brewers makes it ever harder for the small guys to compete.
Rising employer National Insurance costs and business rates have made it financially unsustainable for Mettricks to continue subsidising a loss-making brewery operation.

That said — we regret nothing. It’s been a bold attempt to further develop our local craft scene and we’re proud of what we brewed, the community we built, and the stories shared over an Ascapart pint.

Thank you to everyone who supported Ascapart Beer over our short but sweet existence. Best of luck to Jimmy, Ascapart Co-founder, as he goes on to his next chapter.

But this isn’t the end of the story for us. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be transforming the brewery space into an expanded and upgraded Ascapart Coffee Roastery — giving Wilson the room to take his craft to the next level and bring to life our true passion: exceptional coffee, roasted in Southampton, shared with the world.

There’s still Ascapart beer in stock at Mettricks — available while it lasts.

Here’s to trying to do exciting, high quality things in our city, rejecting the bland and generic (it’s not the first time and won’t be the last), and here’s to finding the opportunities in new beginnings.

Tomorrow is our 1st Birthday! And here's the third and final beer we're releasing especially for the occasion👇

SOUTHERN LIGHTS HAZY IPA
This is for the real ones. An adaptation of a beer very close to our Head Brewer Jimmy's heart that he brewed at his old brewery, got written about in 's book United Kingdom Of Beer, loved by many but is sadly no longer what it was.

Some of the ingredients have been switched up, ABV has been reduced (so pints are on!) and updated process and quality procedures have been used to bring it bang up to date but the soul is very much right there!

Juicy good times with Citra and Columbus hops and a touch of Rye, yum.

It's our birthday on Friday! We're celebrating and have brewed 3 different beers to mark the occasion, here's beer number 2!

🇳🇿LONGITUDE 173 is a New Zealand IPA, named after the longitude of Nelson, the main hop growibg region in NZ. Hopped with Superdelic and Riwaka and fermented with our favourite lager yeast. It's full of dank and overripe fruit character, with an oily bitterness and a super clean finish.

DEPOT is a DDH Pale (thats double the amount of dry hops as our regular pale ales) full of NZ Nectaron and US Mosaic hops. We're getting tons of nectarine vibes as you would expect but with plenty of pineapple, raw honey and white flower notes going on 🍑🍍🍯🪷

Launching this Thursday! Valley Hazy IPA is us starting to really hit our stride, expressive, soft and juicy but with a certain level of leanness that has become a signature of ours. 🏜️ Valley Hazy IPA 5.8%
Brewed with a mixed grain bill of oats, wheat, spelt and rice to give as much fluffy softness as we can to layer an all NZ hop lineup of Nelson Sauvin and Superdelic. It's all zesty white wine, lemon meringue and a little oily dankness.

After a little hiatus our Flagship beer Tides Hazy Pale is back! On tap right now and hitting cans next week.

Full of Mosaic and Idaho 7 hops, it's a tropical fruit fest with that squidgy soft body we love in a hazy pale. We've been playing around with the base malts for this, with this batch brewed with German Pilsner malt from and a touch of flaked spelt (along with the usual oats and wheat for body) it has a little more colour and sweetness than previous batches, something we might tweak again down the line.

The second beer in a week of Brewpub exclusive super small batch beers is here! We're super lucky to be able to experiment with tiny little ferments of joy and stick them straight on the bar . Here's the lowdown on the second in this weeks spring small batch double:

American Brown Ale - Mosaic 4%
The combination of chocolate malts and fruity hops is one we don't get to play around with enough (shout if you want to see us brew a Black IPA, we'd love to!) and this is the most easygoing riff on this idea you'll find. Hopped with our absolute favourite Mosaic for light notes of citrus, mango and pine, a touch of roasted rye malt comes into play on the finish with light chocolate and almond notes bringing it all together. At only 4% this is still super pintable and moreish for a darker beer.

This one is inspired by beers from London's OG craft brewers like The Kernel and US craft beer classics from breweries like Anchor.

On tap now , when it's gone, it's gone as they say.
