On a cold winter's night on Friday February 1st 1991 at 10 pm the exciting arrival of the night began. With all the ultra violet light strips & backdrops put up from the morning up until about 6pm. We left Occasions & went home to get ready to return later at about 9.30, it was just a case of us myself, Julie my partner & my brother Lincoln, to just put on our safety helmets & belt up & enjoy the
flight. With 10-15 people queuing before the doors opened it was a sign to say it wasn't gonna be completely empty. In the 1st week the event had about 50-75 people & the feedback was very good & positive, from the display of backdrops & music. Then each week it went up by about 30-50 people & by August summer time it was full & the cue was up the road 4 people wide past the British Telecom building & around the corner & the venue was full to capacity within 45 minutes. With crews coming from all sides of Sheffield once the word spread, as 1 in unity for 1 thing was to stomp the night away to Techno & eventually it was made a membership as Incubus 91. Over time people began coming from different areas around Sheffield : Rotherham - Barnsley - Derby - Leeds - Manchester - Liverpool - Stoke - Wales - London & even Brighton. if you want to add where you came from then please feel free to add it. Initially it was just me playing for 4 hours taking the crowded on & trip into the many styles of Techno l played at the time & eventually in 1992 l began booking guest DJ's. Techno City was a combination of music, from the 3k sound system, the stompers & visuals that created the unique atmosphere that made it what it was! l did add some mind expanding twists & bends of my own along in the night & each week that quickly became established that went down a storm that people could relate to something special that i hoped that wouldn't be forgotten that made the highlights of the night - There was the " Black Out " which if you were there you got it & understood it, for those that are reading this that weren't there I'll try & explain.... Madness Madness Madness with a touch of complete & utter total lunacy chucked in also! This is not hype believe me, it really didn't need it & was an idea i had that i wanted to share the experience. As I sent word for the wonderful Inne's in the cloak room to turn the lights in the venue off as that's where the switch was located & in doing so there was a loud roaring cheer from the crowd. As blackout was a very dark, mysterious, & very powerful track that I played made by Lil Louis, that when played mentions about all the lights in the universe being switched on & off by the hand of god - taken from the book of Genesis & a single strobe light went on & off & as the record said so, Brrrr its giving me wonderful pleasant chills even though it was so many years ago now ago as it was such a good experience & it happened each week. l recall John & Matt (who had the lease on the venue) on many different occasions each saying to me - what tune did you play for them to be cheering so loud at to which i said: oh that, its the blackout, an idea i had that i believed it would work to which they said oh it works alright & works well as we can hear it down at the front door downstairs. Then there was the old spice track : O Fortuna by Apotheosis, another experience not to be missed out on when visiting Techno City. Then there was the anthem played at the end of the night the track called Techno City by Cybertron - " a modern Mozart of Techno in my opinion " which gave you an indication that the nights stomping was coming to an end & it was over, & as the words in the track went on you could tell & feel the words were going to move something deep inside those there & it did each & every week. If you are amongst the photos from Techno City now added or visited the night & had a pure flight of pleasure, l would like to thank you all for all the support in the year & a half that Techno City was in flight " it was a blast a true pleasure to of shared it with you ".
& I hope you all enjoyed the audio sounds of Techno in all the styles, speeds, shapes & sizes as much as I did. All 3 experiences happened each & every week & was a great experience to share with you all. Not forgetting the many record labels that made it what it was in the music pumped out of the speakers, but the biggest thanks is a shout out to all the Sheffield crews that came from all sides of Sheffield Respect to you all for the memories made 🥰
I brought to you an idea & concept & you made it happen & fly & hope in the 4 hour sets l played, that they expanded your minds to another level of joy & pleasure that i hope will stay with you as they will with me & you'll be able to tell others about your days of stomping in Sheffield at Techno City. In love & light may it always shine bright....
