House music did not have its origins just in American music. The popularity of European music, specifically English electronic pop like Depeche Mode and Soft Cell and the earlier, more disco-based sounds of Giorgio Moroder, Klein & MBO, as well as Italian productions, they all gave rise to House music.

The dawn of a rave new world : Shoom, South London
Paul Oakenfold, second left, at Shoom, 1988. In the summer of 1987, Paul Oakenfold, Johnny Walker, Danny Rampling and Nicky Holloway went to Ibiza where they had a collective epiphany at Amnesia, hearing Balearic DJ legend Alfredo.

They came back determined to recreate what they had experienced in their own vision. Oakenfold started playing house at his Project club, then Spectrum at Richard Branson’s club Heaven. Rampling and his wife Jenni started Shoom, in a fitness centre in Southwark, adopting the smiley logo that would become synonymous with acid house.
