07/04/2026
From 6 April 2026, work rules are changing in important ways:
1. SSP changes
You now get sick pay from day one (no more waiting 3 days).
Even low earners can get it. If you earn less, you’ll get 80% of your pay or the standard rate.
2. Family leave from day one
You can take paternity leave and unpaid parental leave immediately, no waiting period.
There’s also new leave (up to 52 weeks unpaid) if your partner dies after childbirth.
3. Stronger protection for reporting issues
If you report sexual harassment, you are protected by law.
Your employer cannot treat you badly or sack you for speaking up.
4. Higher penalties for unfair redundancies
If a company ignores redundancy rules, they may now pay up to 180 days’ full pay per worker (previously 90 days).
5. Trade unions made easier
It will be easier for workers to form or join a union and get it officially recognised.
6. New government enforcement body
A new agency called the Fair Work Agency will monitor employers, enforce rights, and even take action on behalf of workers.
7. Holiday record rules
Employers must keep records of your leave and holiday pay for 6 years.
If they don’t, they can face serious penalties.
8. Equality plans (large companies)
Big companies (250+ staff) are encouraged to create plans to reduce gender pay gaps and support menopause (this becomes mandatory later).
