Municipal: Final Edition, with Terence Fixmer and An-i [LIVE]

Join us for our climactic send-off. After seven years and twenty-three events, this will be the last Municipal.

We welcome Terence Fixmer, a defining figure in techno for over two decades. His work spans remixes for Depeche Mode and Front 242, his own label Planete Rouge, and releases on Gi**lo, Ostgut Ton and Mute. In 2002, he began a long-running collaboration with Douglas MacCarthy of Nitzer Ebb, resulting in two landmark albums that bridged techno and EBM.
Alongside him, An-i (Doug Lee) brings his distinctive strain of raw, body-driven electronics, heard on L.I.E.S. and Cititrax. Fans of Liaisons Dangereuses and CHBB — this will be right up your street.

We’re thrilled to welcome Detroit techno pioneer Terrence Dixon to Newcastle. Recording under his own name and as ‘Population One’, Terrence has been a mainstay on labels like Metroplex and Tresor, with a career that has spanned 3 decades.

We also welcome back Robin Stewart, aka R.S. Tangent. His recent Crinkle EP on The Trilogy Tapes is one of our favourite techno records of 2025 so far, so we’re delighted to get him up from Bristol.

We end the year with a return to the shadowy intersection where techno intertwines with the various sub-genres of post-punk.

From his formative years as a mainstay on Hell’s legendary Gi**los imprint, to later transmissions on Ostgut Ton and Mute Records, Terence Fixmer has been a stalwart of techno for over twenty years.

An-i (aka Doug Lee) conjures gristly body music and is a regular fixture on L.I.E.S. and Cititrax. His live performances are bruising rituals — where the skeletal pulse of techno collides with the chaos of noise, and his fed back vocals teeter just shy of total disintegration.

We're thrilled to welcome to Newcastle an artist we deeply admire, Detroit techno pioneer Terrence Dixon. Recording under his own name and as ‘Population One’, Terrence has released countless records in a career spanning over 30 years.

We also welcome back Robin Stewart, aka R.S. Tangent. Robin played Municipal a few years back when he was a member of Giant Swan. His recent Crinkle EP on The Trilogy Tapes is possibly our favourite techno record of 2025 so far, so we’re delighted to get him up from Bristol.

BEAU WANZER is a Chicago-based electronic music outsider whose unique sound fuses the Windy City’s raw, Jakbeat lineage with the industrial tape scene of late 70s Britain. Grotty electronic excursions, where nightmarish synth riffs and menacing vocals are underpinned with bruising drum box rhythms. Beau has released highly regarded records, both solo and collaborative projects, and established himself as a staple on notable labels like Nation, Dark Entries, L.I.E.S. and Cititrax.

We’re thrilled to welcome Beau on Friday 4th April, when we present a special night showcasing the underground sounds of Chicago.

Jamal Moss, known by his stage name HIEROGLYPHIC BEING, is a pioneering force in the world of electronic music, celebrated for his bold and unconventional approach to production and performance. His unique blend of Chicago house, acid, and avant-garde experimentation yields a sound like no other, a sound that challenges the predictable frameworks of house and techno. His live sets are notorious for their raw intensity and improvisational energy, captivating audiences with the unpredictability of his music. Municipal has always been about the artists who make a unique contribution to the spectrum of dancefloor electronics, and nobody embodies this more than Jamal Moss.

We’ve been dedicated followers of Jamal’s work for years, so we’re thrilled that the planets have aligned and we’re able to bring him from Chicago to Newcastle for a special live performance on April 4th.

Municipal

Municipal is the product of a 25 year passion for techno, and a compulsion to create an alternative that’s disruptive, focused and motivated entirely by the music. We want to provide the opportunity for people to experience the depth and breadth of what techno can be, in an environment that fully exploits its power. We only present artists that we feel are making a significant and unique contribution to this constantly evolving art form. We avoid trends, hyperbole, and unfounded hype. We’re inspired by live performance, and we’re dedicated to showcasing it at all of our events.

The name Municipal was derived from our ethos; open to everyone, not for profit, belonging to the city. Our nights are as cheap as we can make them, and we only ever hope to break even.

Municipal has only been made possible by the two wonderful venues that we use; Cobalt Studios and The Star & Shadow Cinema. These venues not only provide an ethos and vibe that inspires us, but also high-quality sound systems that are unrivaled in our city, and are crucial in presenting our particular strain of electronic music.
