Grace — A Remarkable Young Carer Who Sees the Person, Not the Label
From a young age, care has been embedded in Grace’s life. With both of her parents working in and running a social care company, Grace has grown up surrounded by people who need support, meeting individuals from all walks of life and experiencing many different forms of care.
For someone so young, Grace has an incredible attention to detail and an almost instinctive ability to observe, understand and connect with people.
It is almost as though Grace has a sixth sense when it comes to people.
She can recognise when somebody is struggling, understand what they may need before they are able to express it, and adapt the way she communicates so that the person feels heard, respected and safe.
For someone who may struggle to communicate verbally, Grace has helped create documents, visual resources and other ways for them to communicate their thoughts, feelings, wants and needs. She understands that communication is not simply about speaking.
And perhaps one of Grace’s greatest qualities is the safe space she creates around people.
Grace has also developed an understanding of people with WFD, recognising when something is wrong, helping individuals distinguish between what is safe and unsafe, and supporting them to regulate their emotions — particularly when they cannot communicate how they are feeling through words.
What makes this even more remarkable is Grace’s age.
At just 17, Grace has chosen to work full-time, volunteer, pursue her studies and dedicate herself to helping other people communicate, become more independent and get the very best out of life.
She pays attention to the smallest details.
And she doesn’t just notice them — she acts on them.
Grace doesn’t simply provide care…
She gives people confidence. She gives them independence. She gives them communication. She gives them choice. And, perhaps most importantly, she gives them the belief that they can achieve more than they ever thought possible.
The impact she has already had at such a young age is phenomenal & I don’t think Grace realises just how special that makes her.
