LIVE MUSIC, WORKSHOP & CULTURAL EXPERIENCE AT THE KLONDYKE CLUB, MANCHESTER
On Friday 22 May 2026, Drumroots hosts Jaliyaa Kumbengo, an extended evening of live music, participatory learning & cultural exchange rooted in West African griot tradition.
Led by Gambian kora player & cultural practitioner Sefo Kanuteh, joined by acclaimed Gambian vocalist Binta Suso & The Meriya Band, with additional support from African drumming troupe Tanante, the event offers a multi-layered programme blending heritage & contemporary performance.
Running from 5:30pm to 11:00pm, the programme includes:
Throughout the evening:
• a pop-up photographic exhibition tracing Sefo’s artistic journey & griot lineage
• a social space for cultural exchange, conversation & gathering
A participatory music workshop invites audiences to take part in:
• learning through kora, rhythm & voice
• shared improvisation & group composition
• an inclusive format — no prior experience required
• koras provided + participants welcome to bring instruments or simply join vocally
The night culminates in a live performance featuring:
Sefo Kanuteh & The Meriya Band with Binta Suso, supported by Tanante, presenting an energetic fusion of traditional Mandinka repertoire & contemporary arrangement.
