The Reno nightclub in Moss Side, Manchester, was more than just a venue — it was a cultural lifeline and a defining force in the city’s underground music scene from the 1960s through to the mid-1980s. Founded by Phil Magbotiwan, the Reno began as a meeting place for African and Caribbean communities before evolving into a legendary late-night club known for its raw energy, intimate atmosphere and boundary-breaking spirit. Tucked away in a basement beneath street level, it became a sanctuary for those often excluded from mainstream nightlife — a place where music, identity and community could come together without compromise.

Renowned for its deep, soulful selections of reggae, funk, soul and rare groove, the Reno’s DJs created a sound and atmosphere that was immersive, unhurried and deeply influential. Nights would stretch into the early hours, drawing a diverse crowd from across Manchester and beyond, all connected by the music and the unique sense of belonging the space offered. In a city later celebrated for its club culture, the Reno laid important foundations — shaping tastes, nurturing talent and creating a blueprint for inclusive nightlife long before it became the norm.

This event pays tribute to that legacy by bringing together original DJs who once soundtracked those unforgettable nights.
