🚨 Artist Spotlight: Kirk Barley
As we continue our countdown, we’re thrilled to introduce another artist from our lineup: Kirk Barley.
Barley is a composer and sound artist whose work is rooted in organic textures, minimalism, and experimental electronics. His compositions fuse field recordings, delicate synthesis, and unusual rhythmic structures, often incorporating alternate tunings to create hypnotic soundscapes that are both intricate and immersive. His approach to tuning and tonal exploration adds a unique depth to his music, challenging traditional harmonic frameworks and enhancing the meditative quality of his work.
As Boomkat describes: ‘Whether under his own name or as Bambooman, Church Andrews, and Grouphums, the Yorkshire-based artist has confected a sound defined by his nuanced approach to lilting rhythmic cadence on the cusp of 4th world ambient, jazz, classical minimalism, and electronic club music. Never too heavy, always luminous and effervescent, his work now achieves a new high point with ‘Lux’, which revels in ever more filigree arrangements of formal minimalism and non-standard tunings with careful balance of electronically pruned instrumental virtuosity and sound design, deftly building on his range of self-released works for Health and via likes of Herbert’s Accidental, thru to his fruitful binds with Leaf subsidiary, Odda.
For this event we’re celebrting the release of Kirk’s 3rd album issued under his own name, ‘Lux’ on Odda Recordings (out on March 21st). Barley continues to come into his own on this release, taking cues from his local Yorkshire landscape, its climate and geology, to articulate his music with an ever more fluid approach and fluency in his musical language.
