THE HIDDEN PAIN OF LIVING ABROAD 💔

One of the hardest parts of living abroad is the emotional and physical distance from our ageing parents. Many of us go years without seeing our parents. I even know people who haven’t seen their parents in over 15 years.

My mom came here in June for a short summer visit. She was meant to return to Nigeria after two months, but two weeks before her return flight, I called the airline to extend her stay and a month later, I did it again. Both times cost me money, but I didn’t care. Every extra day with her was worth it.

Every single moment seeing her around the house brings me a kind of peace and joy I can’t explain.

She finally left yesterday, and honestly, I’ve been so moody ever since.

Family means everything to me. I love being around my wife, kids, and siblings but being around my Dad and Mom hits differently.

Many of us left home in search of better opportunities, but along the way, we also left behind the people who raised and prayed for us. Years go by, and all we have are phone calls, WhatsApp videos, and the hope that everyone back home is doing well.

Sometimes it hits hard, when you see your parents' hair turning grey and skin shrinking over a video call, or you realise you’ve missed yet another family celebration. It’s a painful price many of us silently pay for a “better life.”

If your parents are still alive, cherish them. Call them often, visit when you can, nothing replaces their love or their prayers. May God bless you with the resources and strength to care for them the way they once cared for you.

And for those whose parents have passed, may their souls continue to rest in Perfect PEACE.
