Every Wednesday we do £7-Classics. But BEHIND every classic there’s a story. Here’s the Negroni’s…
1919, Florence, Italy. An aristocrat walks into a bar…
Count Camillo Negroni – a rakish dilettante, part-time gambler, and full-time drinker – stumbles into Caffè Casoni around midnight, wearing a scowl and cigar ash on his lapels.
He’s had a run of bad luck and lousy hands. He needs something stronger than his ‘usual’.
So he calls for an Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth and soda water) – only this time he tells the bartender to ditch the soda and swap in gin.
The bartender says sure, throws in an orange slice, and slides it across the bar. Count Negroni takes one sip, seems like his luck just changed…He never looks back.
Neither did we. With the likes of Hemingway and Audrey Hepburn sipping this Italian classic on the regular.
So here’s to the Count 🥂
See you tonight ;)
