Finally time to pass on the news that many new was getting closer day by day.
Thirteen years ago at the age of 18 I became site manager of the Wheatsheaf hotel in Littleborough essentially taking on the biggest task I’d ever taken on, two years later I signed a 5 year lease taking on an even bigger task of becoming the owner of the business!
The Wheatsheaf built strength week on week and quickly became the place to be hitting full capacity every single Friday and Saturday and a very strong day trade every other day of the week, we even opened a cocktail bar upstairs branded as a totally difference concept to make use out of our function rooms which also became a full capacity venue.
Profit was at a very good level and although many many difficulty’s hit me from general day to day work of running a busy site, we as a team were smashing it! To which I then singed another 5 year lease.
COVID then hit 4 years ago and like many other hospitality venues unfortunately the Wheatsheaf did not recover from this. Our day trade never ever returned as strong as it was, we had to close down the Snugg cocktail bar that we put so much love and hard work into and we then began making a loss from week to week.
Weekends full capacity’s were no longer guaranteed, energy bills DOUBLED, purchase price of a beer was going up and up but we weren’t able to pass all increases over to customers as we were already such a very damaged business from the battering that Covid gave us.
Over the past 9 months we have had multiple meetings with our brewery and begged for help, they have given some but nowhere near enough for what we have needed. Our lease has thankfully been getting closer and closer to being expired and no agreement for renewal has been agreed.
The Wheatsheaf wasn’t just the beginning of my entire career but it was also my home for a very long time, I have millions of memories from very good to very bad and it was most definitely a whirlwind of a life from the very beginning.
A huge thankyou to the hundreds of thousands of people who have had some amazing times in the Wheatsheaf and the regulars but I’m very sad to say it’s now time to say goodbye
Our leaving party will be on Saturday June 22nd
And our last days trade will be Monday 24th
Thank you Matt
