What's your thoughts on student accommodation in Glasgow?

According to Caroline Wilson in today’s Glasgow Herald, the University of Glasgow has opened a voluntary severance scheme that runs until 25th September.

They’re doing it because the number of overseas students is falling — especially postgraduates — while Scottish places stay capped.

Overseas fees are the main money coming in, so the budget is under real pressure.

That drop matters for the student flats too.

A 2024 report found Glasgow only needed about 6,000 more beds than it had at the time.

But the city already had more than 20,000 beds built, plus another 10,000 or so planned or going up.

That left a surplus of more than 4,500.

In plain words: more rooms than students to fill them.

With fewer overseas students coming, that surplus gets bigger.

Will landlords have to cut prices to fill the rooms, rents will soften, and some of the newer, dearer blocks risk sitting half-empty.
