Literally two people asked what I got at the Bellahouston record fair, so here’s my small selection of small records. All found in the same “unsorted” box - always prefer rifling through random stuff…

Couple of Can singles for next time I do a Kosmiche-on-45s night, got a cover for a Manfred Mann soundtrack fave, a Minit single basically for the sleeve, a version of “Light My Fire” I hadn’t heard before (still planning to do a mix… ) and a “minty, ooh, that’s nice on U.K.” upgrade.

Always good to bump into the similarly afflicted and the empire biscuit didn’t disappoint. ☕️

Sun’s out, Guns (Of Navarone) out! ☀️

The perfect weather for cranking out some ska. Despite the various names, think these are basically all backed by The Skatalites.

Always loved the label design on these early Island singles. I’m sure I read it was an early project by Charles Saatchi (of Saatchi & Saatchi) but actually struggling to find any evidence of this… anyone help?

That’s my Clyde Built Radio show from earlier this month uploaded to listen again. Random mish-mash of sevens this time, the theme being... if I like them, maybe there’s a subliminal thread running through them? Reggae, dub, post-punk, left-field funk, shoe-gaze, proto-shoegaze, early-indie, industrial, electro-glam 45s. Hmmm, the theme is... there is no theme.

The microphone was muted, so you’re spared my awkward jibber-jabber. I probably just mentioned The Drowning Craze feature a future Cocteau Twin and The Creation sound like Spacemen 3 a good 20 years before Spacemen 3. Link in bio, like, subscribe etc. etc.

Clyde Built Radio (09/05/26)

Dr. Alimantado “Best Dressed Chicken In Town” (Greensleeves)
Augustus Pablo “Havendale Rock” (Rockers)
Jacob Miller “Baby I Love You So” (Island)

Latest addition to the collection

The Soft Boys “I Wanna Destroy You” (Armageddon 1980)

I’ve loved this high energy blast of power-pop post-punk since hearing it as a teenager in the mid-80s. I was introduced to it at Texas Fever, the first Glasgow club night I used to attend religiously at 46 West George Street. Texas Fever was an integral part of my musical education and I was exposed to so much incredible music which I absolutely soaked up like a sponge. I occasionally look back and think about the club’s floor-packing anthems: Cabaret Voltaire’s “Nag Nag Nag”, Sonic Youth’s “Death Valley 69”, The Birthday Party’s “Release The Bats”, Suicide’s “Ghost Rider”, The Go Betweens’ “Right Now” and the thing they have in common is… only in an alternate universe could these be considered floor-packing anthems! But in that tiny upstairs function room, they sounded amazing and were just perfect. “Free your mind and your ass will follow!”

The Soft Boys incendiary guitar intro followed by the superb three part vocal harmonies were another clarion call to the floor and Robyn Hitchcock’s anti-war sentiments are equally relevant today. So, it’s only taken 40 years for this nugget to be added to the Divine archives*, but I intend to play it loud and introduce it to the next generation...

Digging With Divine is happening TONIGHT (16/05/26) in McChuills. 8pm till midnight. Free entry.

*Thanks to for the good times and for sorting me out! 🙌

Rock me again & again & again & again & again & again!

Great wee night in on Saturday, with DJ Food tearing it up with all things dance on 45. I even got to bust out some rave 7”s later.

Spacial Awareness (Chris & Dave moonlighting from ) warmed things up magnificently with a superb pedal-steel fuelled ambient live set and kept the groove locked down all night in the bar - good times! Thanks everyone who got down. 🙌

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT!
Sat 2 May

We’re delighted to have respected crate-digger and collector Nic Goodlife spinning 45s in the bar all night in McChuills. We asked her for her current Top Ten soulful funk and breaks 45s and here is her most excellent selection.

10) Mr. Scruff - “Champion Nibble” (Ninja Tune)
I picked this 45 up many years ago when Mr. Scruff played the QMU. Jazzy and funky instrumental bizness.

9) The Allergies “God Walked Down” (Jalapeño Records)
In my view the Allergies’ best release, it’s a punchy track with heavy drums and uplifting gospel vocals!

8) Soul Hooligan “Sweet Pea” (Freskanova)
Classic UK big beat banger, looking forward to playing this one loud.

7) Durand Jones and the Indications “Witchoo”(Colemine Records)
Smooth and soulful grooves from the Indiana funk outfit to warm things up.

6) James Brown “Can’t Get Any Harder” C&C LONS Mix (Polydor)
Busta Rhymes and crew get involved to bring a 90s hip hop edge to the godfather of soul release. Break-tastic!

5) The Ballistic Brothers “Blacker” (Acid Jazz)
The intro to this track says it all…! It’s a trip, it’s got a funky beat, and I can bug out!

4) High Contrast & Jamie McCool “You Don’t Understand” (Highly Contrasting)
Soulful vocals layered over rolling D&B breakbeats.

3) Will Sessions and Amp Fiddler “Rendezvous” (Sessions Sounds)
This p-funk / boogie heater will hit the right notes with Roy Ayers fans.

2) Benita “Time for a Change” Hot Mix (Athens of the North)
Lost disco classic courtesy from the Edinburgh’s AOTN.

1) Gloria Scott “Promised Land” (Acid Jazz)
Uplifting soulful version of the house classic! A brilliant end of night track.

Nic Goodlife plays the bar all night (8pm-midnight) in with DJ Food , Spacial Awareness (feat. members of ) and Andrew Divine in the Main Arch. Strictly 45s all night!

On Saturday (02/05/26) in we’re proud to present a rare live set by ambient duo Spacial Awareness, comprising Belle and Sebastian members and Dave McGowan . Formed last year, they’ve created an experimental soundscape fusing analogue synths and pedal steel guitar with nods to Kosmiche Musik and minimalism.

They’re warming up for DJ Food aka (Ninja Tune) and their tracks wouldn’t sound out of place on his excellent Telepathic Fish compilation. We asked them for a list of influences, and they’ve chosen some absolute beauties.

+++

10) Steve Hillage - Rainbow Dome Musick (1979)
My favourite anxiety-busting LP. Lay down and drift off…

9) J. Fajerman / J. Yrssen - Racines Synthetiques (1978)
Slinky sexy French synth pioneers. Air must’ve been listening.

8) Kraftwerk - Ralf & Florian (1973)
They really got their s**t together on this one, became the group we know and love.

7) Nala Sinephro - Space (2021)
Beautiful jazzy spaciness (with a few curveballs thrown in.)

6) Beak> - >>> (2018)
Could’ve chosen any of their records, they’re all great. We decided to form the group after attending their last show in Glasgow.

5) Cluster - Sowiesoso (1976)
Melodic, intimate, emotional. Zum Wohl brings a tear to the eye.

4) Ashra - New Age Of Earth (1977)
Amazingly hypnotic layered swirls of synthy guitars and guitary synths.

3) Hiroshi Yoshimura - Green (1986)
80s FM synths somehow being made to sound like the lushest of rainforests.

2) Roedelius - Wenn Der Südwind Weht (1981)
Just like the sleeve art, sounds like shimmering sunlight reflecting on playful ripples.

1) Brian Eno - Apollo (1983)
A masterpiece, one of the best records ever made. Unashamedly the blueprint for Spacial Awareness.
