Tonight is the night where Ben UFO + Bake touch down at Sensu.
Given their friendship and rich history of playing together, we asked Bake to provide some tracks track that have built their bond over the years.
Over to you Bake 🎤
“i’ve picked 5 tracks that ben has played over the years that were pretty formative for me, alongside a couple that we’ve both bonded over / always seem to come back to”
Slide 1
VC-118a - Deploy
Not messing around with the tempo this week, starting fast - 128bpm, 6th august 2015. Very funny that 128bpm is fast considering tempos now, but at the time it really did feel like that, a kind of push straight away.
I have this memory of ben referring to these kinds of tunes as “humid”, which i’ve always loved that.
Slide 2
Smyglyssna - insvept e paper
Originally released in 1997 via us imprint plug research - home to kim rapatti’s mood ep, which should tell you everything you need to know - this is another one from a 2015 rinse show from Ben which, looking back, seems like a formative era for me, for many reasons, with one being that he was the only person playing these kinds of tunes.
Slide 3
Badmarsh & Shri - Signs (Calibre Remix)
We recently talked about this and agreed that it’s such a good song. One of calibre’s best. Not much more to add really.
Slide 4
DJ Narciso - Cachê
DJ Narciso has been on a tear on bandcamp for the last few years and imo makes some of the strongest tracks in that whole portugal / batida world.
Slide 5
Ben UFO, Factory, Club Circus, Osaka (DJ mix) (58mins 45secs)
Ending this back at 2015, but referencing the full mix because, looking back over the past 15 years of dj mixes and Ben’s contribution to them, i think this one is up there as one of the best. maybe also one of the first where a mix from our world started to spread virally, relative to its era.
An absolutely incredible mix, with every track accounted for except this one. the lore is that it was going to come out on all caps - a label i once ran - but, for many reasons, never did. i sent it to Ben and he played it out a lot at the time.
This kind of track is 100% up our street - see if you can figure out who made it :)
