WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT
Spellbound is an antidote to all the depressingly identical kitschy 80s nights out there. DJs SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful) and JAYNEY BLAMBLAM (Total Blam Blam) ditch the cheese and play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our actual time span is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert our Doomsday, but we’ll spin the odd track outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of people who remember it first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it all as new. Think: post-punk, goth, new romantic, alternative rock, new wave, electro, gender benders, early indie, 2 tone ska, mod revival, synth, blitz kids, oddballs, effeminate futurists and one-hit wonders… Look out for the Eighties visuals on the projections for extra period authenticity. Dressing up is encouraged, but not enforced. WHAT WE PLAY

ARRIVE EARLY! Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We aren’t saying you won’t get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still ARRIVE EARLY! CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK! Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £3.00, exclusively for Spellbound! THE UNDERPANTS SONG! If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a shot of CHERRY SOURZ for free! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of Cherry Sourz! YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM! There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound, to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, staffed by the lovely Bonnie, and priced at £1 per item.

Wishing you a 'Happy' WORLD GOTH DAY from SPELLBOUND!

See you tomorrow at Komedia Brighton where, even though it's not a Goth Special or anything, you'll definitely hear loads of Bauhaus, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure, Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Cramps etc (& maybe a light dusting of Fields Of The Nephilim, Alien S*x Fiend, The Birthday Party, Danielle Dax, Gene Loves Jezebel, Virgin Prunes, The Bolshoi, Specimen and other Goth acts if you ask), among our usual broader Alternative 80s playlist. Because that, let's fact it, is how we roll.

A small number of advance tickets remain: https://www.komedia.co.uk/shows/spellbound

Here's a question we haven't asked in a while. REQUESTS FOR SATURDAY? (Within reason, obvs. Anything considered as long as it's broadly within Spellbound's Alternative 80s universe and it isn't a super-obscure deep cut that's gonna empty the floor.) We always look at requests on the night itself, scribbled on the clipboard, but sometimes it's helpful to go into it pre-armed with a few ideas of what people are feeling, right now...

WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT WE PLAYED AT SPELLBOUND'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY! You know what, it's mad to think that the next time we do a Spellbound Birthday Party, a baby born on the day of our opening night will be legally old enough to actually attend the club. (There were at least two people present this time who were also there way back on our opening night, but we don't think they had a baby on that occasion...)
Huge thanks to everyone who came to party with us. It filled up early and the atmosphere was lovely. Special thanks to our friend Stevie who kindly brought the '1' and the '7' in helium balloon form. Thanks also to the folks from the Kindred Spirits daytime festival coming up on Sunday 10 May (Balaam and the Angel, Skeletal Family, Wasted Youth) who provided competition prizes in the form of tickets for the gig. (The question was public transport-related. You can probably work it out.) And a special award for heroism to our own Jayney BlamBlam who had to dash home in a taxi midway through the night because Simon had stupidly forgotten to pack the underpants for the John Foxx song.
The next Spellbound is on Saturday 23rd May, which – important, please note - is not our normal slot in the month. We've been bumped back a week by The Great Escape, and for one month only we're on the fourth weekend. Tickets are on sale NOW from the Komedia Brighton Box Office.
Meanwhile, a bunch of pictures from our birthday bash can be seen at this gallery https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1843248856935830&type=3, and a full list of the bangers we played is below. Just gutted that we somehow didn't think to play “Edge Of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks (although we did play that one by The Regents). FFS...
