DARK DEAN

Dark Dean is a true Drum and Bass soldier, there from the beginnings of the Jungle and DnB scene. He originally started out in the early 1990’s playing breakbeat hardcore and from that to Jungle Techno. This is when he was given the nickname Dark Dean from his reputation for playing darker, grimier jungle. His first DJ set was back in 1995 for the legendary night 'Destiny' at The Manor. He then went on to hold a residency at Destiny as well as for one of Bournemouth’s biggest nights 'Cocoshebeen' at the Opera House - now the O2 Academy. You can also find some of his jungle productions on the legendary 'Underdog Recordings' label, with the track 'Touchdown Junglist' (produced alongside Hankinson) featuring samples of MC Shadow.

Dean has dedicated a lot of time to the Bournemouth scene, spending many years working in local record shops, putting on his own nights and also playing on local radio shows. He's also supported many of the biggest DJ’s in the UK, playing alongside the likes of Kenny Ken, Micky Finn, Pendulum, Mampi Swift, Congo Natty and Andy C to name a few.

MC SHADOW

It all started when his cousin gave him a C90 tape back in the summer of 1991. It was Top Buzz at Sterns in Worthing. Almost immediately that was it. He went from a Hip Hop man to a Hardcore man in 90 minutes. From there his first indoor rave was Orange at The Hippodrome in London and first outdoor rave was Raindance NYE 1991/1992.

Regularly seen MC'ing for Fusion back in the day, as well as performing on stage for countless events including the mighty 'Fantazia' - a stand out being the legendary Castle Donnington event in 1992 alongside DJ Dream (the B side of the classic 'Ellis Dee' tape). Inspired by the likes of MC Mad P (Top Buzz), MC Conrad - who took him under his wing at 'Fantazia Showcase', and MC Ribbz - who looked after him at the huge 'Universe Big Love' and pushed him forward to MC with Grooverider.

Micky Finn was there at the foundations. With musical roots stretching back into the proto-hardcore acid house days of the eighties, he's having been among the very top tier of deejays and producers ever since. And the reason is simple, where some might stray into moody gangsta posturing or elitist conceptual art, his goal is simply to make ravers enjoy themselves.

From early productions like “She's Breaking Up” (produced under the name Bitin' Back), through his seminal collaborations with Aphrodite, onto his 2010s work with contemporary innovators like Erb n Dub and Voltage, his tunes have been making people dance for nigh-on thirty years. Production standards and styles might have evolved, but the one constant has been that he knows how to make a beat connect with audiences. No wonder selectors as disparate as breaks legend Adam Freeland, Carl Cox, and, of course, pretty much every jungle and DnB deejay ever, have played his tunes at one time or another.

And that all-about-the-ravers ethos manifests in every aspect of his career. A crowd favourite resident from the earliest days of iconic promotions like AWOL and World Dance, his deejaying has taken him to a passport-disintegrating list of countries. A Micky Finn set, packed with one-away specials and the latest fire blended into a rolling rave-wrecking frenzy, is a roadblock affair wherever he touches down.

Even aside from his production and performance work, he's got his fingers (or Finngers, if you prefer), in several other DnB-flavoured pies. His labels, Urban Takeover and Finn People, have, over the years, played host to the likes of Majistrate, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, and Camo & Krooked, among many other heavyweights. As well as knowing his way around A&R, he's also one of the masterminds behind the monumental DnB holiday experience Sunbeatz.

As we say, Micky Finn was there at the foundations. But he's also helped build the walls, put the roof on, and sort the electrics. Or, to abandon the metaphor, he's simply one of the true icons of the rave scene and a British music institution.

One of the most recognisable voices and flows in Drum and Bass music.

“I never aimed to be the #1 MC. I only aimed to be the very best I could be and realise my skills. I’m well aware, when you sit in the number 1 spot, there is only one way to go after that. Staying there is a lot harder because styles and tastes change.”

“For me, I just wanted to maintain my position among the best of the best. I’ve always been 100% about anything that I do, so I naturally want to do it to the best of my ability. I’ve always been hungry and forward thinking about what’s around the corner. You know, what’s next. It’s been consistency and hard work that has kept me around for so many years. I realised very early on that to maintain your position, you must maintain your hustle.”

“When I won best MC the first year, I was literally beside myself. It was like it didn’t really register at first. I didn’t think that much of it, if I’m honest. But it had a huge impact. I remember getting on that stage and looking at all the fans and my peers cheering and bigging me up. It was pretty surreal. The only person I could think about was my mum. That award is still sitting proudly on her mantle piece in the living room of my parent’s house.” He's since been awarded 'Best Crowd Hype MC' Winner 6 times.

When it’s Fearless on the mic, his unique tone and flow distinguishes him from his peers. He’s been in the game from the beginning and literally been there, seen it and done it all. Fearless started MCing in the sound system circuit, MCing to Ragga and Rare Groove. After he first heard Acid House Fearless connected to a DJ outfit called The Brainkillers & DJ Red Ant who had their own show on pirate radio station Innocent FM. It was here where he started to hone his skills.

Shortly after Innocent FM went under, Fearless was headhunted by the guys who ran the legendary Weekend Rush FM. It was this station which built the one time rookie MC and put him on the path to success. 1989 was the year he took his MCing to another level.

Just a few years later in 1993 he came to the attention of legendary Drum & Bass outfit AWOL. Teaming up with great friend MC GQ, they went on to host the seminal nights at the Paradise Club. The culture at AWOL was one that resonated with Fearless. It was simply about fun, community and the shared experience of dancing all night to some serious fresh dubs dropped by the DJ’s. It really was A Way of Life.

Arguably, AWOL was the club that cemented Fearless’s name into the minds of all DnB heads across the UK. From here he went on to appear all across the UK and Europe at such legendary nights as World Dance, One Nation, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, Accelerated Culture, United Dance and many, many more.

Fearless is a man in demand and continues to appear all over the world including UK, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Canada and USA to name a few. He's committed to spreading the vibe of Drum and Bass and Jungle the best way he knows how.

Artist Info: Dope Ammo

From humble beginnings as night club promoters way back in the mid 90’s to successful music producers, Dope Ammo have come a long way. Switching their efforts to production in 1998, the successful team were quick to start working with the likes of Micky Finn and Aphrodite, subsequently remixing their underground classic ‘Bad Ass’ in 2002 and signing to Urban Agency as both DJs and producers alike.

Dope Ammo (or The Drunken Masters as they were known at the time) released a string of successful drum and bass anthems including the likes of ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Roots & Culture’ before parting company in 2008. It was at this point that Coco, originally part of The Drunken Masters team, decided to continue to produce and DJ around the world under the solo guise of Dope Ammo.

Later that year Coco Shah released his second album as Dope Ammo entitled ‘Roots & Future’ which shortly after was listed as album of the month by Mixmag. Big things were to come from this including a solid fan base for both the label and production associated with it plus a whole host of DJ bookings around the world. Bangkok, Vienna, Berlin, Barcelona, Las Vegas, New York to name but a few!

Being recruited by Sony Music to remix Alan Walker’s ‘Faded’ in 2016 and studio collaborations with jungle legends Serial Killaz and Benny Page were all huge achievements in Dope Ammo’s career. Not to mention remix duties for the likes of A.M Sniper (of So Solid fame), Dynamite MC, Tenor Fly, Bigga Ranx and Curren$y.

Links with Sony also became true when working alongside the PlayStation brand, creating music for the likes of Activision and CodeMasters and producing video game music with the world-renowned Sigma.

Budding producers will be pleased to know that Dope Ammo has a long standing relationship with Loopmaster and has created some amazing production packs including a collaboration with Vital Elementz and more recently, a full on production course via the BassGorilla website.

Further career highlights include a Beatport number 1 alongside DJ Hybrid with their remix of Baby D’s 90’s classic ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’ seeing DJ support from the likes of Carl Cox, High Contrast, Charlie Hedges and many more. A strong partnership with Moondace was formed during the UK lockdown in 2020 which promises a future album featuring remixes from the likes of Ray Keith, Slipmatt, Nookie and Benny Page.

That’s not all in respect of remix collaborations as 2021 will see high profile releases including a rework of The Rat Packs ‘Searching for my Rizla’, Awesome 3’s ‘Don’t Go’ and the legendary ‘Hurt You So’ by Jonny L getting a big refresh.
