I’ve just shared a full review of Reeling in the Qu**rs by Páraic Kerrigan over on TikTok.

This book looks at LGBTQ+ history in Ireland in a way that feels honest, human and urgently important. Reading it brought me back to conversations around marriage equality, q***r visibility, activism, and how quickly people forget what life was actually like for LGBTQ+ people across Ireland.

As a gay man from Belfast, and now a Humanist Celebrant working across Northern Ireland and the North of Ireland, parts of it felt deeply familiar. Not because the stories are identical to mine, but because the atmosphere, the silence, the humour, the coded language and the resilience all felt recognisable.

I didn’t want to reduce the review to a 30 second reel, so the full conversation is now on TikTok if you’d like to watch it.

Happy Pride Month 🌈

As a gay man from Belfast, I don’t think I’ll ever fully lose sight of how much has changed here, and how quickly people can forget just how recent that change is.

Now, through my work as a Humanist Celebrant across the North of Ireland / Northern Ireland, I get to stand with couples every week celebrating relationships that previous generations often had to keep hidden, quiet, or coded.

That’s not lost on me.

Pride, for me, is joy, visibility, protest, community, resilience, and remembering the people who pushed things forward long before it felt safe or popular to do so.

That’s why I’m recommending every LGBTQ person read Reeling in the Qu**rs by Paris Kerrigan.

Happy Pride Month everyone 🌈

The loudest negativity often comes from people who are uncomfortable seeing others grow.

Happy people support. Attractive people compliment. Successful people encourage. People with nothing to offer criticise.

One thing I’ve learned through weddings, funerals, community work and life in general is this, secure people do not need to diminish others to feel important. The people doing meaningful things usually cheer others on quietly in the background.

Protect your peace. Keep building. Keep showing up.

Carol, the Queen of Cobh, has officially married her King Consort Decy👑

A brilliant day in Cork celebrating two people who never stopped laughing & crying their way through the ceremony.

Family, quick wit, great stories and a packed room full of people who adore them.

Carol and Decky brought their full personalities into the day and that’s what made it work so well. Nothing forced. Nothing overdone. Just the two of them, exactly as they are.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Doyle.

Thanks for trusting me to tell your story.

Stacey and Thomas became husband and wife, surrounded by the people who they love and in a room full of warmth, emotion and joy.

An absolute privilege to tell your story and stand with you both as you started this next chapter together.

Congratulations, Mr & Mrs 💛

Helen and Hamish are married.

There was such a lovely atmosphere in the room from beginning to end, and it was a pleasure to stand with them as they marked this moment together.

Congratulations, Helen and Hamish. Thank you for trusting me with such an important part of your day. 🤍

Our Piaras would’ve been 22 today. Funny, kind, cheeky and loved a good bun or piece of cake. Today I shall have cake in his memory and to remember the funny & brave things this fella got up to during his short time with us.

Grief changes as we change. It never fully goes away, but over time it begins to look and feel different.

The Waterworks might not be the first place people think of for a proposal in Belfast, but just look at it.

A beautiful North Belfast park, a bit of history, plenty wildlife, two lakes, and more than a few lovely wee corners for a “will you marry me?” moment.

Here are my top five proposal spots in the Waterworks.

Planning a humanist wedding ceremony in Belfast, Northern Ireland and the North of Ireland? The proposal is only the start. The ceremony is where the story really gets told.

Megan and Thomas 🤍
Just married.

Two people who chose each other, again and again.

A family built with care, plenty of craic and honesty.

So much love in one room.

Thank you for letting me stand with you.
