I remember hearing that it was up in flames late one night and the next morning i went for a drive by on my way to work, there were loads of people stood around watching as the infamous old co-op halls lay smouldering about to be reduced to a pile of rubble, it was the end of an era......
In the late 1800s The Co-operative Halls were built and the served the community until the closure in the 80s. It provided a bakery, butchery, funeral parlour, grocery store, clothing, furniture and even a dance hall. Even after the closure in the 80s The Co-operative dance hall was used as the "Room At The Top" (RATT) Where many nights were spent dancing and singing to happy tunes until it caught fire in 1997. Massive Respect to all those who remember and who will never forget...
