The HISTORY of the ho**ah 💨
The history of the ho**ah is a rather complicated and confusing issue; there are many different versions and interpretations.
⚜️Most versions say that ho**ah originated in India (near the border with Pakistan), and then gradually spread to neighboring countries in the west, including Persia and the Ottoman Empire. However, there are many other versions of the passage of a ho**ah, showing that other peoples also had a smoking device similar to a ho**ah in their history. According to some sources, the ho**ah of that time was made of a piece of wood (a mine), and a coconut shell or pumpkin served as a vessel.
⚜️The name Ho**ah is far from the main one in the world lexicon. In Turkey and its neighboring countries, ho**ah is called by the names derived from the Arabic word nargila. For example, nargyleh (Israel), nargile (Turkey), nargiles (Greece). The word Nargile itself is borrowed from Sanskrit and means the word coconut (originally a vessel in a ho**ah was made from coconut).
⚜️Another name for the type of ho**ah common in Egypt is Goza. Goza is a portable device made of coconut with two sticks and a bowl at the end of one of them. Another Egyptian ho**ah - boury or būrī - is a ho**ah on a stand that allows it to rotate around its axis.
Ho**ahs in the Persian Gulf at that time were called gedo / qadu, they had a similar shape, but the vessel was made of clay. Over time, the ho**ah in Persia began to be called the word hukka, it comes from a Persian pot for storing various utensils.
⚜️Another famous name for ho**ah in the Arab countries is Sh**ha. It came from the Persian word “shishe”, which translates as glass. From this we can conclude that Sh**ha appeared in later times using glass flasks (vessels) instead of coconut.
⚜️In the USA and Great Britain ho**ah can be called by different names - ho**ah, hubble-bubble (hubble - hummock, bubble - bubble), water-pipe (water pipe). In these countries, Sh**ha is to***co for ho**ah.
⚜️In Iran, the ho**ah is called galyan. The word is supposed to come from the Arabic gẖlyạn (boiling). In Russian, a distortion of the word is used - ho**ah. By the way, this is what he is called only in the territory of the former USSR.
⚜️It is believed that the ho**ah acquired its modern look in the 18th-19th centuries in Turkey, where ho**ah shafts were made for the first time from metal, and hoses were made of genuine leather.
⚜️In Europe, ho**ah gained some popularity in the 19th century, due to the fashion for oriental exoticism. By that time, ho**ah was already considered a sign of oriental luxury.
⚜️Ho**ah became popular in Russia only in the 1990s, when the Russians began to travel abroad on vacation (to Egypt or Turkey). It was there that most Russians first saw and tried a ho**ah, and many began to bring ho**ah as a souvenir.
