The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #23: Elvis Presley - Hound Dog [Live at The Louisiana Hayride] - Mind the dust of the static-y recording from this live-to-radio performance of "Hound Dog." But to celebrate the codififying of the birth of the Elvis sound - with the primal drumming of DJ Fontana - we also have to acknowledge his passing at 87 years old. That's right: Elvis' original stick man has died. Still, we can enjoy when he was perhaps at his best: backing up the King doing his ass-shaking antics in "Hound Dog."

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #22: Warren Smith - Stop The World - Most famous for white hot rockers (Uranium Rock") or meditative, mid-tempos, this one falls in-between to devastating effect. Almost stoic and deliberate in his delivery of harrowing lyrics of su***de ("I don't mean to sound so cross..."), the coldness, rather than any sort of affect, makes him sound serious - and that's what is scary the most.

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #21: The Collins Kids - Hop, Skip & Jump - Over a suitagly bouncy beat, the rockabilly brother/sister act covers the jump blues of Roy Milton. While covering a jump blues tune is a try and true move for the genre, this tune especially grooves with a country twang. And dig the fancy footwork of pre-teen guitarist Larry Collins - the first youth guitar idol: the title is mighty appropriate.

The Collins Kids - Hop, Skip and Jump - 1957. From the syndicated TV show "Ranch Party" which featured county, hillbilly and rockabilly artists. Carl Perkins...

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #20: Charlie Feathers - One Hand Loose - This second-tier rockabilly classic is sung by Charlie Feathers, a character that needs to be heard to be believed.

It's hard to take Charlie Feathers seriously, even if his own conviction is utterly unquestionable. His high pitched hillbilly hiccup of a voice probably more at home a gangly farm-hand is betrayed completely by his gangland lethario words. I mean, he's just such a sexy beast, he literally needs only half his hands available to get his passionate feeling across. For you to believe this character, he only needs to be heard.

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #19: Ronnie Hawkins - Hey Boba Lou - Not Ricky Ricardo's favorite tune, it's a haunting, southern gothic melody from The Hawk. Opening with a weird, eery vocal, its an intro to a mood not typical to the genre....but done so well here.

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #18: Little Richard - Dew Drop Inn - with ShanghaiPRIDE kicking off, perhaps its proper to acknowledge the trifecta of rockabilly queerdom: icon Little Richard; proto-billy/punk/everything great Esquerita; and legendary "secret" den of southern back gender fluidity, The Dew Drop Inn. This song: written and with piano from Esquerita, under the name and vocals of LR, and about the Dew Drop (and its "friends"), says its all with a waving, colorful flag.

Little Richard signed with Reprise Records in 1970, releasing the album The Rill Thing

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #17 - Carl Perkins - Pointed Toe Shoes -- "Everything's all 'r**t'" says the incomporable Mr. Perkins, who comes in with a galloping guitar intro. It's Friday night: so whether you come in with a pair of those, your heavy metal stompers, or even (gulp) sandles with socks, twinkle your toes over to The Hoy Hoy.

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #16: Janis Martin - Love and Kisses - If the nickname she was Cat-King saddled with - "Female Elvis" - rings of lazy, infantualizing sexism - her own best music certainly doesn't. "Love and Kisses" she struts, "I don't want 'em." And that's just the first line of the song...If that's been your experience, maybe you'll dig the first ever Hoy Hoy Ladies Night...tonight! Free punch with a kick for ladies 9pm to midnight. DJ B.O on the decks.

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #15: The Everly Brothers - Leave My Woman Alone - This 'billy cover of a Ray Charles tune wins wih the sheer futility in the voices of the boys...and some funky ass high-hat work by the drummer.

The Hoy Hoy Song of the Day #14: Nervous Norvus - Ape Call - Sitting at the corner of rockabilly and comedy; it's kitty corner from "the beats"; down the road from crazy; and smack in the middle of genius town: it's Nervous Norvus. His (intended) comedy with any examination feels uncomfortably personal...but isn't that the best comedy? "Dig" Nervous...and also come tonight to see stand-up comedy at The Hoy Hoy!

A #24 hit from 1956, by a truck driver who was ALSO a BRILLIANT songwriter.
