We just wanted to give a HUGE thank you to ALL OF YOU for helping make GFCB's what it was.

The idea behind GFCB's when we first opened up back in 2008 was to do more than simply put on concerts or create a space for bands to play, but to create a community. We wanted to facilitate a hub for the music-loving youth of St. Albert and Edmonton where they would be able to come and meet new people, discover new music, have their young bands perform for the first, or even last time, and all within a positive, loving, safe environment free from drugs, alcohol, violence and much of the negativity that can come along with the local music "scene".

On Saturday June 15th 2013, we hosted our very last concert. With the opening of our brand new Youth Centre/Venue "The Cellar" in North Edmonton, it made sense for us to begin to shift our focus towards concerts in that new space. But, we didn't want to go out without a bang!

We welcomed back many of the bands that have been regulars at the venue, and whom we've formed some great relationships with. It was also the very first show for a new young band, as well as the last show ever for a seasoned band of Edmonton. We were blessed with over 130 people coming out to celebrate.

Thank you all so much for your support of GFCB's over the last five years! Thank you to anyone who has ever come out to a show, who has volunteered their time sitting in the concession, or by the front doors, cleaning the basement and parking lot, designing and printing posters, and postering the city. Thank you to all the bands who played! Thank you for having your first shows with us, thank you for having your cd-release parties with us, thank you for having your last and reunion shows with us.

WE LOVE AND APPRECIATE YOU ALL!!!

A message to the aspiring artists of Greater Edmonton. Write good music and people will listen to you and go to your shows. Don't feel pressured into a business model that screws you over as an artist. The staff at GFCB'S understand what it's like to be broke musicians and understand the value in facilitating a healthy music community. That's why we try to keep our shows cheap & pay the bands first - any "profit" we make goes directly back into the venue. This is your community as much as it is ours, take ownership of it and help us transform the scene. See you all on Saturday for our final farewell show!

Jazz musician Dave Goldberg wrote a pointed and darkly humorous open letter to LA club owners that I thought was worth sharing. In it, he argues that it’s actually a counterproductive practice for venues to book bands who are willing to work for free. And when I say “counterproductive,” I mean it’s…
