Today, we honour the thousands of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans who have served with courage and dedication.

On National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize the service and sacrifices of Indigenous Peoples during the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and in times of conflict and peace since then. Your contributions have played a key role in defending the freedom of our country.

This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the unveiling of the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Ottawa, Ontario. The Monument reflects the unique heritage, diverse cultures and lasting contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

🕊️🇨🇦 The end of a remarkable chapter in Canadian peacekeeping.

On June 16, 1993, Canada withdrew its peacekeepers from Cyprus, concluding a mission that had lasted nearly 29 years. Since 1964, more than 25,000 Canadians served with the United Nations force on the divided island, helping maintain peace and stability in the region.

The mission came at a cost: 28 Canadians lost their lives in service. Today, we remember their dedication, sacrifice and contribution to one of Canada's longest overseas military commitments.

President Lynne Payette was the Reviewing Officer at last Tuesday's ACR for the 19 Portage Army Cadets. She presented the Best Citizenship Trophy to Sgt. Gavin Oldford, also in the picture is Warrant R. Hildebrant. Service Officer Bob Oldford presented a cheque from. the Poppy Fund to the Army Cadet Corps.

Today we remember Private Trooper Darryl Caswell of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2007, by a roadside bomb attack. He was 25 years old.

Known as “Caz,” he is remembered for his adventurous spirit, love of life, and passion for challenges — qualities he carried into his service after joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 2004.

His legacy continues to be felt in his hometown of Bowmanville, Ontario, where a street was named in his memory.

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment is one of the oldest regiments in Canada. With a history dating back to 1795, it only became a part of the Canadian Army in 1949.

During the First World War, Newfoundland was not yet part of Canada, but a separate dominion of the British Empire. Despite the province’s small population, it raised a regiment that would build a lasting legacy of bravery and sacrifice.

During the war, it was the only colonial regiment given the title “Royal.”

Today, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment remains a proud part of Canada’s Armed Forces and a cornerstone of Newfoundland and Labrador’s heritage.

On June 6, 1944, more than 14,000 Canadians landed on the beaches of Normandy. The Allied D-Day invasion was one of the most pivotal moments of the Second World War.

Facing heavy enemy fire and impossible conditions, Canadian soldiers fought with extraordinary courage to help liberate Europe from German occupation. More than 350 Canadians lost their lives that day, and hundreds more were wounded.

Today, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served on D-Day and throughout the Battle of Normandy. Their courage changed the course of history.
