"There are tens of thousands of Edmontonians of African, Arab, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent for whom family, community, and culture convene over sh**ha, which has been consumed around the world for thousands of years (and in Edmonton for over a century).
When sh**ha was banned by City Council and City Administration, they never spoke to us nor assessed the serious adverse effects it would have on our communities. Instead, they listened to people who looked like them and suggested there to be something nefarious about our culture and questioned the right to consider this city our home.
However, we listened to them and developed a solution to address each and every concern they raised. We developed a solution where there would be no second hand smoke to workers at these establishments. We agreed to ban all minors and to convert to non-nicotine, herbal product. We agreed to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to renovate our establishments to ensure their concerns were addressed, including installing the best HVAC devices in the smoking area of our lounges.
Now, despite our efforts, the anti-sh**ha groups are saying that we still should not be allowed to be reopened under these significant restrictions because it’s not economically viable for establishments to make these changes and allegedly that Edmontonians do not want them back.
There is a long history of politicians and elites in our city targeting and depriving Black and Brown communities in Edmonton of equal standing based on vice ordinances and public health concerns. This is another attempt, where instead of working with us to develop a safe, harm reduction approach to sh**ha consumption in our city, these groups attempt to vilify our cultural practices in attempt to pit the majority of Edmontonians against us.
We hoped that these groups would choose to engage in dialogue with us to find a solution, rather than continue to stigmatize and exclude our communities from the rich cultural mosaic that is Edmonton. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case."
