A truly extraordinary piece of Marquesan art.

Featured in Michael Hamson’s By Descent, this remarkable Marquesan Tiki is a powerful example of the distinctive visual language of the Marquesas Islands — monumental features, intense expression, and an almost otherworldly presence.

What makes pieces like this so fascinating is the way Marquesan artists transformed the human figure into something simultaneously ancestral, spiritual and intensely alive. Every line and proportion seems deliberate, giving the Tiki an unmistakable sense of power.

Seeing an exceptional object like this documented in By Descent is a reminder of just how extraordinary the artistic traditions of the Marquesas are — and why Marquesan sculpture remains one of the great treasures of Oceanic art.

📖 Michael Hamson — By Descent is filled with these beautiful objects and the amazing stories behind them 😍 Check his website with wonderful content as well https://oceanicart.com

The i ula tavatava — a Fijian throwing club 🇫🇯

One of the most distinctive weapons from Fiji: the i ula tavatava, a throwing club with a beautifully carved, deeply fluted head.

Made from a single piece of dense hardwood, these clubs were designed to be thrown with considerable force. The lobed and grooved head isn’t just visually striking — it gives the weapon its characteristic weight and balance.

What I particularly love about Fijian clubs is how functional objects could also become incredible examples of craftsmanship. Every line, groove and curve was carved by hand, turning a weapon into a powerful piece of material culture.

In this video I take a closer look at this example and its distinctive form.

**Plastik der Südsee — 1956**

A beautiful and fascinating piece of early literature on the art and material culture of the South Seas, published in 1956.

This particular book came recommended to me by Sven Kirsten, so I was more than happy to add it to our collection. Books like this are not only valuable references, but also wonderful windows into the way Oceanic art was documented, collected and understood in the mid-20th century.

Another great addition to the library — and one that fits perfectly alongside our collection of Oceanic art, ethnographic books and Tiki-related material. 🌴🌺📖

**Club Types of Nuclear Polynesia — Churchill, 1917 📚🌺**

A fascinating early study of Polynesian club forms, published by the British anthropologist **William Churchill in 1917**.

*Club Types of Nuclear Polynesia* documents and classifies the remarkable diversity of traditional Oceanic clubs, looking at their forms, regional variations and cultural context. A wonderful glimpse into the early scholarly documentation of Polynesian material culture — and a valuable reference for anyone interested in Oceanic arms and ceremonial objects.

Books like this are more than references; they are windows into how the material culture of the Pacific was being recorded and understood over a century ago.

A fascinating piece of Kanak material culture from **New Caledonia**: a traditional **yam knife**, dating to around the 1970s. 🌿🔪

Far more than a simple agricultural tool, yam knives were associated with the cultivation and ceremonial importance of the yam — a fundamental crop in Kanak society and an important part of social and ritual life.

This example measures approximately **49 cm high and 8 cm wide**, with its distinctive elongated form and beautifully aged surface showing decades of use and patina.

Another remarkable piece of Oceanic art and ethnography in the collection. 🌴

**TABOO: The Art of Tiki 🌺🗿**

Published in **1999**, *Taboo: The Art of Tiki* is an important early book in the modern revival and appreciation of Tiki culture and art.

What makes this particular edition even more interesting is the **foreword by Sven Kirsten**. At the time, *The Book of Tiki* had **not yet been published** and was still known under its working title, *In Search of Tiki*.

So this book captures a fascinating moment in Tiki history — right before Kirsten’s groundbreaking *The Book of Tiki* would help define and document the modern Tiki revival.

For collectors, historians and lovers of Polynesian-inspired art, *Taboo* remains a great snapshot of the movement as it was taking shape at the end of the 1990s.

The patterns of **Marquesan Patutiki** are far more than tattoo designs. 🌺

They can be found across Marquesan visual culture — carved into clubs and ornaments, woven or painted onto tapa, and of course carried on the skin as tattoo.

In this reel, I tell the fascinating tale of **Tiki**, whose body was divided and whose different parts were scattered across the islands. In traditional interpretations, some of the most recognizable Patutiki motifs can be understood as representations of these body parts.

I take a closer look at **three common Patutiki patterns**, exploring their forms and the intriguing connection between tattoo, carving, tapa and the ancestral story of Tiki.

A beautiful example of how Marquesan art is not made up of isolated designs, but of a shared visual language connecting **body, object, story and island**. 🗿🌊

Final part of George Brown’s *Polynesians and Melanesians* — a fascinating early 20th-century account of the peoples, cultures and traditions of the Pacific.

Brown (1835–1917) was a Methodist missionary and ethnographer who spent decades in the Pacific, and his writings provide a valuable, if very much period-specific, record of the societies he encountered. What makes books like this especially interesting today is the combination of ethnographic observation, historical context and the visual material documenting Pacific cultures at a time of enormous change.

Another beautiful piece of Pacific ethnographic history for the collection. 🌺🌊📚
