Some of you might know we love absinthe at Little Red Rooster. We have a part of our menu fully dedicated to a selection of our favorite absinthes of the moment.
Beautiful and mysterious absinthe speaks to the imagination of many. But what is it exactly?
Absinthe is a strong, anise-flavoured spirit distilled with wormwood, fennel and many other herbs.
Originating in Switzerland in the late 17OO’s, it gained a lot of popularity in 1800’s France. There, it became more than a drink. It was a cultural phenomenon intertwined with artistic and bohemian lifestyles. A symbol of sophistication and rebellion, at ‘L’heure verte‘ it was impossible to ignore the presence of the ‘green fairy’,
Later, wine lobbyists and government officials pushed to ban absinthe because of its so-called psychoactive effects. Modern science has since debunked that argument. As a result, we can once again enjoy absinthe in peace.
What we like about absinthe is the time it demands from the drinker. One does not simply have a quick glass of absinthe. The magic lies in the anticipation, watching the ice water slowly dripping into your glass. The changing colour, the captivating aroma and then the first sip: it’s an experience no other beverage can offer.
How do we drink absinthe?
At Little Red Rooster, we serve traditional-style absinthe… In a traditional glass, depending on the absinthe, with a little sugar, and water by brouilleur or absinthe fountain.
We have plans to organise an absinthe-themed evening with a tasting and lecture about this beautiful drink. We dive into it's history and folkore and off course, drink! Please give us a shout in the comments if you would be interested in such a night so we could gauge the interest in this obscure spirit!
