Just last week, we launched this year’s summer menu.
Whereas our winter drinks tend to be more stirred and boozy, Old-Fashioned style, the summer selection uses fresh produce, resulting in a series of zesty, bright and sunny beverages that wouldn’t be out of place at the side of a pool, or in the shade of an orchard.
More than that, our aim is to pay homage to one of the most influential eras in bartending history: the first part of the twentieth century in Cuba, when American barkeeps traded New York or San Francisco for Havana, because of Prohibition, and joined forces with the illustrious Cuban ‘cantineros’.
So many rum drinks originated in Cuba, such as the Daiquiri (named after a beach near – yikes! – Guantanamo), the Mojito, the Papa Doble, the Mary Pickford – the list goes on and on.
Mid-century Havana was a hotbed of feverish imbibing, with large, sleek bars from which the clattering of shakers and the buzzing of blenders spilled out into the bustling streets. Oh, to be twenty in 1920’s Havana…
If this menu can offer you even a quantum of the thrill of that era, our mission will be accomplished.
As Cubans would say: ¡Salud, amor, pesetas y tiempo para disfrutarlos!*
* ‘To good health, love, money and the time to enjoy them!’
