One my favourite disco/funk producers, the quirky Hamilton Bohannon, has passed away overnight, at 78 years of age.
Bohannon’s 1978 dance floor classic ’Let’s Start The Dance’ is the track we sampled in 1990, for our Filthy Lucre remix of Yothu Yindi’s 'Treaty'. This disco romp is what gave 'Treaty' its gritty, stomping funk sound and the iconic vocal line “clap your hands and dance”. Many other artists have since sampled Bohannon songs in their music, including Mary J Blige, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg.
Also interesting to point out, is that in the 1981 Tom Tom Club classic ‘Genius of Love’, Tina Weymouth's (Talking Heads bassist) rap features Bohannon's name as a chant …
“Stepping in a rhythm to a Kurtis Blow
Who needs to think when your feet just go?
With a hippie-the-hip and a hippie-the-hop
Who needs to think when your feet just go
"Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon"
Who needs to think when your feet just go
"Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon"
James Brown, James Brown
James Brown, James Brown”
In recent years, Bohannon was honoured by the city of Newnan, Georgia USA when they renamed the quarter-mile stretch of road where he grew up ‘Hamilton Bohannon Drive’ and a new Berlin club was named ‘Bohannon Soul Club’.
Hamilton Bohannon thank you for the music and the inspiration. R.I.P. (1942-2020)
