After handing legends Love Hotel District the ropes to launch our new VOID.CAST series, we are stoked to share with you...
VOID.CAST 002 Featuring none other than VOID favourite, Isaac Fryar.
Not only has he given this second VOID.CAST installment a fu***ng rinsing with an hour of unscripted, no holes barred house & techno, he was nice enough to have a chat with us about this mix, VOID and of course his fine self.
Enjoy!
VOID - OK MATE, WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?
IF - Playing records in the kitchen pi***ng off my folks with yet another hobby. This one stuck though. Played music all my life from playing piano, to playing saxophone and studying music theory.
VOID - I LOVE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT IT NOW?
IF - F**k man. Like 11 years now. I'm 30 this year. F**k I'm old.
VOID - ONLY AS OLD AS YOU FEEL, BROTHER! WHERE CAN PEOPLE CATCH YOU IN THE FLESH?
IF - Not so much these days really. I've played pretty much everywhere over the years. I'm lucky I get to play gigs I love and not have to slog it out at clubs. I'm currently lucky to play Novel gigs regularly, Revolver Fridays and Void parties. That's plenty for me.
I've also had fun giving back a bit this year with 'Ain't No Siesta' in Geelong. Pleasurekraft 2 weekends ago was ridiculous!
Plenty of great gigs coming up with Novel and Stable I'll be playing at. But if I told you I'd have to kill you!
Playing a million gigs a week and clubs isn't really for me. Pretty sure the tunes you hear here wouldn't fly at the emerson or circus for example! Top 100 tunes aren't my jam.
VOID - DO YOU PRODUCE ANYTHING OF YOUR OWN?
IF - I've always made my own edits and stuff.
I've put together a few tunes over the years with friends. Lately I've been working on tunes with my pal Hoops under the guise TNPC. Few tracks floating around out there and a few more to come.
Production is not something I am actively pursuing, and certainly not something I am going to pay someone to do for me. That's lame. Letting someone else define your sound because you're lazy isn't for me. Each to their own.
VOID - COULDN'T AGREE MORE! DID YOU GO WITH A PARTICULAR THEME FOR THIS MIX?
IF - Not really. Just some favourite tunes I enjoy on my iPhone. Bit of everything.
VOID - WHAT DOES THIS MIX SAY ABOUT YOU AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH VOID?
IF - Tough question. I think it represents the strong friendship I have forged with you guys. I haven't said no to a Void gig yet because the guys trust me to get the job done, and let me play whatever I want. This mix says a bit about that I think.
VOID - AND WE HOPE WE CAN KEEP THAT RECORD INTACT! LASTLY, EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE QUESTION, BIGGEST/BEST/CRAZIEST/MOST MEMORABLE GIGS TO DATE?
IF - I've been lucky enough to do heaps of warms ups and closes over the years.
Playing b2b with Radio Slave is always going to be a special one for me. Closing for Nina Kraviz was one of those swoon moments and kinda had to pinch myself closing up DJ Koze, who got annoyed with venue management when they turned the lights on me!
I'm a lucky bloke who has really been blessed to have done it all over the years. Melbourne has some serious local talent too which shouldn't be overlooked. Playing gigs on the same bill as these guys has always been a highlight; Mike Callander, Safari, Monty McGaw, Adrian Bell, Hoops, Lucille Croft and of course you blokes.
VOID - QUITE A LIST AND BLOODY WELL DESERVED! THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS AND THIS MIX, WE CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT!
IF - Cheers for having me!
