But it wouldn’t be Javanesia without an afterparty now would it? After “UNCONTAINED” last year we of course needed Robbie to close us out with some weird tunes. He’s kept this one to 50 minutes, which is about 1/6th of the marathon he played in a certain shipping container at a *classified* time last year. The other differences are that he’s not mixing off an iPhone, and he’s probably slept at some point in the last 4 days.

A fantastic DJ no matter what the equipment and my favourite b2b partner, I am frothing for this mix. Also an extra special shout out to Robbie for doing this mix despite not actually coming to Javanesia this year - this man gets it.

Now it’s really a wrap - GO TO BED WE’VE GOT PACKDOWN FROM 8AM TOMORROW MORNING!

And so we drag our weary bodies into Sunday, the delirious climax of the week at Javanesia. Except you’ll probably notice that it’s not Sunday, it’s Monday. I’ll say two things on this - firstly, that the elusive DJ Pleasure didn’t pitch for his set so there have had to be some behind the scenes re-arrangments, and secondly, it’s a burn so things aren’t supposed to run on time.

While Sunday may be the week's climax, I can assure you that this mix is not. I’ve poured everything into it but doing it reminded me how insanely hard DJing actually is - we are so so lucky to have all the amazing DJs in this crew that we do, and even luckier that they’ve pulled together such a wonderful selection of music for us over the last week. I think it’s been a true reflection of what we’re about, and I’m hugely grateful.

This mix is pretty close to what I (Masroom) would have played this year on Sunday night, and as a result is pretty close to what I will play next year on Sunday night, as depth isn’t my strong suit. It contains:

- synths
- an ABBA remix
- 3 really good transitions
- a failed spinback

Hope you all enjoy it and can’t wait to be on a dance floor with you all soon!

It’s tough to overstate the impact that Wulfsohn has had on Javanesia. After rocking up to a half finished, empty dancefloor in the middle of nowhere for his set in 2018, he may have wanted nothing more to do with us. But he persevered, agreeing to be our head programmer for 2019, taking the lead on one of the most important aspects of the week.

If I start writing about how good it was I’ll probably start tearing up again, so let me instead say that if you found yourself in the Jungle Desert Disco and you enjoyed yourself, the odds are Daniel Wulfsohn was behind it.

He’s also a phenomenal DJ – while most of us at Javanesia (particularly the organisers) are kind of making it up as we go, Dan’s a professional, and it shows. Despite the camp being on its knees after The Tuesday Tornado, he played a set that night that brought us all together and reminded us that your don’t need to camo netting looking fresh to have a great party. I’m hoping he’s going to do something similar with this mix, reminding us you don’t need a burn to listen to great progressive house.

Enjoy!

By Friday the party is in full swing, with ODE finishing at god knows what time last night, and Bubbles and Bass starting up soon after. Come midday, Javanesia returns to the decks for an extra special triple header, featuring three of our most exciting residents; past, present and future.

Paul LeRoy

When Paul messaged me just before the burn last year asking if he could have a set, I felt an obligation to squeeze one in for him on Monday night. He was a first time camper, and we want all the campers to get a slot if possible. Little did I know we would be getting a world class selector on the decks, and that after that set, Tim and I would turn to Paul again and again throughout the week to fill slots and be part of improvised b2bs. He’s a fantastic DJ, and I was really looking forward to having him play again this year, but luckily he’s pulled something together really special for us here.

I wouldn’t dare try to define Paul’s sets, so let’s just say you’ll want the good speakers for this one:

Paul Mulvey

Of all the Javanesians that were supposed to play this year, Paul was the one I was most excited to introduce to Afrikaburn. A fantastic representation of the vast medley of styles, sounds and moods that can be heard across London on any given Saturday night, I was really REALLY looking forward to unleashing him on Afrikaburn and giving some of the weekend warriors a good fright. This mix is exactly what I wanted late Friday night to be, and I’m frothing you’ll all get a taste of what’s to come next year:

Turnstyle

Arthur and I learnt to DJ together, and so it was with immense frustration that I conceded he was significantly better than me by last Afrikaburn, and booked him to play before Ode took over on Thursday. Him and Daniel held down a packed dancefloor for hours and hours, doing what the burn does best with uplifting banger after uplifting banger. He’s gone from strength to strength since, crushing it at our fundraiser and becoming a regular at the 9 Rankine pre-parties, so I was really looking forward to having him play his own slot this year. He told me he's really pleased with this one, but that it would have been even better with "a big fan, some dust and a bottle of iced tequila and rum by my side"

Javanesia spends a lot of time trying to push sounds not normally heard in the desert, whether it’s the smoothest of house from J-Cue and Sibz, flamboyant disco on a Sunday night, or some of the grittier sounds coming tomorrow. But sometimes, on special occasions, you’ve got to let rip with what the dust does best – desert techno. Thursday is such a day for Javanesia, our ODE takeover. It’s undoubtedly our biggest day, and all thanks to Nick & Leila aka Contact high. While it would be hard to beat Nick’s 6.5 hour back to back with Madmotormiquel, what these two had planned for this year was taking a damn good swing at it.

But there is a silver lining: we have this wonderful mix. I’m in two minds as to whether it’s a good idea to post it – when Nick told me it was somewhat melancholic, I didn’t think I’d be tearing up 10 minutes in. So be warned – you will be transported back to that Thursday afternoon if you listen to this, and that may have some unintended consequences…

Enjoy!

... and now for the other half of sound of Javanesia, JCue. I can't tell you how excited I am for this mix - I've been trying to get a mix out of this guy since we crawled out of the desert last year, and so am immensely excited to get to share one on the Javanesia page.

J-Cue is going to be taking us even further into the jungle on this trip, showing us the "Deep Side of JAVANESIA". He's been known to get on the mic at the most special of Javanesia dancefloor moments, so I'm silently praying we'll be hearing those dulcet tones at some point along the way.

Also, big shout out to both J-Cue and Sibabalwe for gifting us their tracklists, saves the rest of us hours of hunting the internet for these hidden gems!

1. ABEL – INSIDER (FROMWOOD BURNINGSIDE REMIX) 2. DANISM, TRAIN(UK), DJ RAE – NO LIMITS (VOCAL MIX) 3. A_TRAK – TRIZZY SAYS 4. MIKE RISK – WELCOME TO MY HOUSE (ORIGINAL MIX) 5. BLAQKONGO – ALWAYS THE

There are three people who are primarily responsible for what is essentially an 8-day long round the clock party. One of them, 2019’s head booker, is dropping his mix on Saturday. The other two are the unmistakable sound of Javanesia, Sibz & J-Cue, our two residents-in-chief. They are responsible for the groovy, sexy house music that came to define the den of inequity that was the Jungle Desert Disco.

I cannot begin to count how many hours these two spent holding down the dancefloor last year. DJ not showed? Put Sibz & J-Cue on. Dancefloor getting a bit empty? Put Sibz & J-Cue on. I can remember clearly Friday night being the night I was going to finally go out and explore the Binnekring, but these two came on and I ended up spending yet another night glued to the Javanesia dancefloor.

This being 2020, we’ve kept the mix Covid-compliant, and so sadly we’re not getting that b2b magic we know and love. The good news is, twice as many mixes! First up is Sibz, with his Ode to Tankwa:

1. Kid Fonque - 2 Sides(Take 2) 2. Luvless - Vary in Colour 3. Crackazat - What You’re Feeling 4. Groove Assassins, Sol Brown - Get Together 5. Jerome Hicks - -Love To The World(Jerome Love & Unders

Yesterday was a very sad day.

As you know, yesterday was the day that in a parallel universe hundreds of people arrived at a just-about-finished theme camp, somewhere in the Tankwa Karoo, for a week of equal parts madness & euphoria, pancakes & dust. We still can’t quite believe it’s not happening.

Music would have been a big part of the week for all of us. We’re the Jungle Desert Disco, and while we may serve pancakes and we may have a damn comfy chill space, we also have a dancefloor that doesn’t stop for the last 96 hours of the party. But behind what might seem like chaos, is a carefully constructed programme that hopes to offer something a little bit different from the typical Afrikaburn dancefloor, while still providing what matters most: Dance Floor Atmosphere. Getting said chaos arranged into 120 minute slots is the responsibility of the programmers, and we have a different one for each day.

We therefore thought it might be nice to have the programmer for each day do a mix for the would-be-Javanesians, to give them an idea of what they would have been hearing on that day in that Covid-19-free parallel universe. While a 1-2 hour mix is no substitute for 18 hours of programming, hopefully each day you can listen to the mix and get excited for next year.

First up, we have Daniel Beck aka A1 Resident Evil. Those of you who were there last year will immediately point out that Dan is not a programmer, but is in fact the behind the scenes MVP who makes sure everything runs smoothly and that the sound is crisp. And you’d be right. Except for the fact that Dan plays a secret warm up set on Sunday night before the party for the build crew, aptly named “The Sound Check”. Last year, Dan’s downtempo beats had the burners flocking like moths to a burning effigy in the middle of the desert. It therefore seemed only fitting that he gets us started again this year.

So ladies and gentlemen, welcome to “The Sound Check”:
