Ten years on, we remember with fondness and gratitude Sean Byrne, the visionary and owner of the renowned Baymount Hotel and the legendary Silver Slipper Ballroom.
A true pioneer who saw the awakening spirit of a new Ireland, Sean opened the Silver Slipper in 1960, throwing open the gates of Strandhill and creating a magical space where thousands upon thousands—from near and far—danced the night away, fell in love, and met the loves of their lives.
From the timeless elegance of the Mick Delahunty Orchestra and the energy of the Capital Showband, to iconic nights with Eric Clapton, Chris Rea, The Wolf Tones, Dexys Midnight Runners, Hot House Flowers,Roy Orbison, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, U2, The Undertones, and so many more, the Baymount and Silver Slipper became the beating heart of music, romance, and community in the Northwest of Ireland.
Sean Byrne wasn’t just a ballroom owner—he was a dreamer and showman who helped shape the social fabric of his generation. His legacy lives on in every story shared, every memory of nights filled with music and laughter, and every couple whose love story began on that famous dance floor.
Rest in peace, John J. (Sean) Byrne.

When the customers can’t come to you, Sean made a plan of going to the customer.
In conjunction with the legendary Fr. Duffy in Collooney, who approved the site. A giant marquee tent was put up next to the train station and they came from near and far to see the best of the Irish Showbands and international acts.
Fr. Duffy was counting the heads in the door so the church got its cut and if there was any bother inside the agitators were swiftly removed and may have got a penance from the Father on the way out but never a refund. 😂

Hard to believe 40 years today since this legend passed. He graced the stages at the Baymount and Silver Slipper many times with Easter Sunday 1980 and Thin Lizzy being the biggest night in Strandhill and dare I say in Sligo nightlife.

Where did those 50 year go, may the those lost in the Miami Showband massacre rest in eternal peace. They lifted the roof of the Silver Slipper many times.
