Unemployment: a visual protest

RK Editions is thrilled to announce the publication of a special edition by Iranian artist Mazdak Shadkam. The photograph 'Ill at Ease' is from the series 'Unemployment: a visual protest,' an ongoing project that directly references the artist’s daily life while unemployed. Shadkam not only explores unemployment as a daily living condition, but investigates the underlying dynamics of that space as well as the emotional state of living in the company of unemployment. Shadkam is known for images where physical places carry connotations of larger concepts, such as home and nostalgia, and where objects are emotionally charged. In Unemployment he takes this exploration of identity rooted in time and space one step further.

Since 2012 Mazdak Shadkam’s work has explored concepts as nostalgia and ‘home’ as global phenomenon. This recent series depicting clothing develops this idea further to portray concepts in which personal places and human belongings define us in particular ways. Visually intriguing in shape, color, and texture, the abstraction of form conceals the items functionality. At the same time the selection calls for a different kind of narrative where the imagery raises questions regarding ownership and sentiment that reinforce the object’s history.
