We are sad to report that the building that housed El Leon de Oro/Korbel Hall has been gutted. The ballroom has been completely removed and the balcony has been converted to a full third floor. Looks like the original arched ceiling has been removed as well.

The El Leon de Oro prior to my grandfather owning it was also Pontrelli's Ballroom.

Here's a message I received from the grandson of Pontrelli's Ballroom on a vintage forum -

"My Grandfather bought Korbel Hall from the Korbel's in the 1940's and opened a bar and ballroom. Pontrelli's Ballroom. I believe he rented it in the 1960's possibly to your Grandfather.

I will try to scan some of the materials I still have from the Korbel's that I've had since I was a child in the early 1960's.

We use to call it the First Street building. My Grandparents lived on State in a mansion built by a concrete contractor that went bankrupt. It was razed by the freeway in the early 1950's
