Richard Steven Matthews, 78, of Slidell, LA, passed away on September 9, 2024. Born on February 20, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was the beloved son of the late William Clayton Matthews and Shirley Doell Matthews. Richard was a graduate of East Jefferson High School and furthered his education in Mechanical Engineering at Delgado Community College. He enjoyed a diverse career, initially working as a draftsman and CADD operator. His passion for dance led him to become square dance caller and a teacher, cuer, and choreographer of round dancing. Beyond his professional endeavors, Richard was involved in his community through his hobbies and volunteer work. An avid photographer with a keen interest in computers, music and reading, he also dedicated time to volunteering at Slidell Memorial Hospital. Richard was a devoted member of The Village Lutheran Church in Lacombe, where he was active in various church activities, including singing in the choir. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Frances Ruppe Matthews; daughters Kimberly Smith (Andrew) and Jennie Petersen (Patrick); grandchildren Erika Brittingham (Donavan), Daniel Smith, Kaia Petersen, and Gryffin Petersen. He was preceded in death by his parents. A service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at The Village Lutheran Church; 29180 US - 190 in Lacombe, Louisiana, on Tuesday, September 24th at 11:00 AM, reception to follow. Richard will be remembered as a faithful, supportive, and creative man with an infectious laugh, who cherished his time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
