The Catamount Lounge is proud to feature cocktails from three of its bartenders in the 2026 Virginia Spirits Cocktail Games! This one, "Old Medicine," comes from Shenan Hahn. From Shenan about her cocktail:

"Old Medicine" is a tribute to the botanical medicine endemic to Appalachia. Before access to modern medicine was widespread, folk cures harnessed the healing power of native herbs, flowers, plants, and trees. This cocktail brings forward into the glass the oldest healing practices of our region, capturing a time when one's apothecary was sourced by hand from the life blooming all around them, and recipes and knowledge were passed from person to person, from the earliest inhabitants all the way into the 20th century. It also blends together into something enticing and drinkable: bitter, sweet, herbal, smokey, and earthy all at once.

The base of this cocktail is a root tea: a blend of dried edible roots steeped in hot water that families often each had their own distinct recipe for, and which inspired the creation of what we now know as root beer soda. Dandelion and chicory root compose this tea, both used to support liver health, digestion, and blood sugar. Though many root teas often included sassafras, the FDA now cautions against excessive consumption of the plant. That's where Amaro Averna comes in: it provides a similarly dark, sweet, earthy flavor, bringing a sassafras-like note to the blend. The hickory tree, whose bark was used by indigenous groups and early settlers as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic agent, treating everything from arthritis to respiratory issues, is also incorporated in the form of a syrup, made by steeping shredded hickory bark in sugar and boiling water. Finally, Virginia-distilled Twin Creeks First Sugar Moonshine provides the backbone of the cocktail, as moonshine was considered its own kind of backwoods "medicine": restorative to the spirit, produced from the ingredients at hand in closely guarded locations and recipes.
Finally, it's garnished with edible native flowers, a tribute to our relationship with the healing power of the natural world around us.

And if you didn't know, in addition to owning and operating The Catamount Lounge, Shenan is a musician, and released a song as an accompaniment to this cocktail! It's called "Light Of The Midnight Sun," and is available to stream everywhere. Check it out, and her music page at Shenan Hahn Music.

The Catamount Lounge is proud to feature cocktails from three of its bartenders in the 2026 Virginia Spirits Cocktail Games! This one, "Rum Shaker," comes from Christopher Allen Kenworthy. From Chris about his cocktail:

The "Rum Shaker" is a tip of the fitted cap brim to the 1992 hit single "Rump Shaker," performed by Wreckx-n-Effect and written by Pharrell Williams of future Neptunes fame, which intoxicated the charts and dancefloors, bringing Virginia into the ring as a competitor to be reckoned with in the rising hip hop and recording artist industry. This song is especially important historically because it brought one of the most influential duos in hip hop into the spotlight: Virginia's own Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, aka The Neptunes who were discovered by Wreckx-n-Effect frontman Teddy Riley at a local high school talent show.

Due to the upbeat and vibrant nature of "Rump Shaker," I felt that the tropical fruit notes and high octane would make the Virago Rum 151 the perfect spirit to provide the backbone of the drink (and the dancing courage to the consumer). Going with a mojito-style drink was the obvious choice for me, but I wanted to shake things up a bit, pun intended. Citing Chad Hugo's Filipino heritage and my own love for Filipino flavors, calamansi syrup, ube syrup, Thai basil, and sugar cane were brought into the mix. Finally, the aesthetic of the "Rum Shaker," with its contrasting colors and flamboyant garnishing, are where we see the spirit of Pharrell in this drink. Soda water and saline bring all the flavors together on the finish.

The Track "Rump Shaker" truly encapsulated a moment in time in Virginia musical history in an unexpected way. It brought Virginia to the forefront of entertainment and The Neptunes and Pharrell Williams to the world. Similarly, "Rum Shaker" brings unexpected flavors and presentation to the glass that meld together into a memorable and unique cocktail.

The Catamount Lounge is proud to feature cocktails from three of its bartenders in the 2026 Virginia Spirits Cocktail Games! This one, "Royal Oak," comes from Julieta Hernandez. From Julieta about her cocktail:

From the cannons fired, the lines drawn, and different flags planted, the small Virginia town I live in carries a wealth of rich, bittersweet stories. Theories say the name "Front Royal" comes from a large oak tree, nicknamed the Royal Oak, which was used as a battle checkpoint. I’ve made it the concept of my cocktail, "Royal Oak”: a tribute to Front Royal, and the rich colonial and revolutionary war history that happened in Virginia. In this riff on a Manhattan, gun smoke, red coats, and land acquisition echo with every sip.

The hero spirit, Royall Rye Whiskey from Deep Creek Distillery blends the best of rye and other whiskey grains, tastefully finished in oak barrels. The blend can remind one of the American Civil War, of which prominent trails run through Main Street. The British held their colonies in Front Royal, and Virginia at large, until we began the struggle for independence in 1776. British-made Pimm's No.1 represents the old country whose rule we freed ourselves from. Of course, as a Manhattan riff, we have to have Angostura bitters—also a British ingredient. The French also had interest in the town of Front Royal, as well as supported the Virginia militias in the war. French-made absinthe rinses the glass for this cocktail to give it further complexity. Cayenne pepper and oak smoke represent the heat of gun fire… as well as the sacred earth burned up from native land long ago in this Helltown (another nickname for Front Royal!) as colonists invaded and changed it forever.

Oftentimes, we forget how much history exists on the ground beneath us. While we can regret how bloody things might have gotten, we can also be astonished to learn how much influence other countries have given us, or the drama of events that got us to where we are here: a noble town hiding it’s secrets in Shenandoah Valley, as I’ve represented by this slightly sweet, slightly smoky, slightly spicy and delicious cocktail, The Royal Oak.
