27 April is a national holiday in the Netherlands, to celebrate the King's Birthday. Dutch people dress up in orange, drink orange drinks, and eat orange food, they take to the streets to share their enjoyment, fun is had by all.

Happy Birthday Edgardo Donato!

In 1924 he wrote ‘A Media Luz’ - a tango tune so popular that it reached the USA, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, even Japan, it was re-recorded by Canaro, and even decades later when the melody was reworked by Bob Musel, it hit no 1 in the charts for sheet music in the UK in 1947.

Donato was born on April 14 in 1897 in Buenos Aires, his father was a musician, two of his brothers were also musicians. Edgardo studied the violin and eventually (1930) started his own tango orchestra.

He was known to be absent minded; once he said that he really admired a singer and wished he could work with him, while the man in question was standing near him, in the orchestra, waiting to record a song… people said that he ‘lived on the moon’.

Hugely popular DJ from Manchester, who has gained popularity with his traditional DJing in events all over Europe

DJ statement: I used to be a simple man who doesn’t do any dancing or music related activities, however few years ago I have been diagnosed and suffered from a chronic tango addiction, transformed me into a fanatic milonguero. Finding the cure, I am currently undergoing a daily high dosage of tango music prescription to ease this illness. My DJ inspirations come from the dancers; the responses from the dance floor instigate the music I play. I always like to make things simple, music I play range from guardia vieja to the epoca de oro and always involve a wide variety of the newer tango from 1950 / 60s. I like to create waves between songs and tandas, strong rhythm and high energy. I am determined to let the dancer feel the sentiments of every piece of the classic I play, sharing the most precious 12 minutes with their partners within a tanda. It is not important what I play, I normally let the dancers decide what to come next, I only help to create the best moment for everyone. The only thing I dictate is when the dancers stop dancing in milonga, but this is something that I will never let them, because I play for the dancers and the true dancers only.

You will fall in love with his music when you hear it!!!
John, who gives his best to whatever he does, is one of the top-level marathon DJs. This man who does not deviate from the classics adorns his sets with little sauces from the 50's and 60's.
He hails from Madchester, the home of The Haçienda, the land that changed the history of dance music until the very end.

30 March is the birthday of our namesake artist - Vincent van Gogh. Born in 1853 in Brabant, NL, Vincent was the oldest living son, with five younger siblings. Vincent didn't start work as an artist until he was 27, but in the following ten years he produced innovative and astonishing art that commands delight, awe and record-breaking prices around the world today. Vincent was a passionate, talented man, with several unrequited or unfulfilled romances in his life, he had fierce friendships, strong views on art and theory, and an incredible vision, but was sadly too unstable to live to old age.

He lived in the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium and finally France. When he moved to Arles in the South of France (eventually to live in a house he immortalised as 'the yellow house') he said:

‘Sunshine, a light which, for want of a better word I can only call yellow – pale sulphur yellow, pale lemon, gold. How beautiful yellow is!’

You can see from our website and fliers that we at TanGogh also feel passionately about these yellow hues, and the sunflowers that Van Gogh painted to welcome Gauguin when the Parisian artist agreed to come live with him in Arles. Just as Vincent so ardently desired Gauguin to join him to practise his art in the Yellow House in Arles, so we wish that you will be there in Leiden, with us, this July.

Happy Birthday Rodolfo Biagi! The man they called - ‘manos brujas’ - magic hands.

Biagi was born in San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina on 14 March 1906.

His compelling melodies pull us onto the dance floor, where his cheeky syncopations fill us with surprise and delight… like the swirling colours and bursting stars of van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ (1889)

He first played violin, then piano. Started work as a musician long before he reached his majority, although his parents hoped he would become a teacher. He accompanied Carlos Gardel on recordings for the Odeon label, played piano for d’Arienzo and eventually started his own orchestra, which was one of the first to be featured on a TV broadcast.

We wish for many happy returns of your songs.

Introducing a DJ new to TanGogh🌻, but not to the tango ronda - Cinthya Tomino💛 was born in Argentina🇦🇷, where she began her journey as a DJ, starting out in her hometown before becoming a professional in Buenos Aires, playing in the city’s top milongas.

For more than fifteen years, she has travelled the world, sharing her DJ sets and her authentic porteño style.

Cinthya was eight when she began dancing the tango, with a youth tango group, participating in several performances and national tournaments and learning different styles of tango.

She began her professional career, aged eighteen, as part of the Sabor a Tango company, directed by Verónica Salmerón, accompanied by the Fabio Hager Sextet. She was a semifinalist at the World Tango Championship in both roles, and had the pleasure of performing in some of the most important milongas and theatres in Buenos Aires.

Cinthya has taught and danced in different countries across America, Europe, Asia and Africa, sharing Argentine traditions and passion for tango—as a teacher in both roles👠👞 and also as a tango DJ.
