Founded in 2010 by Kumari Suraj, LAโs International Waack/Punk/Pose Festival - known globally as Waackfest - is widely recognized as the worldโs first festival dedicated to Waacking and one of the first queer dance festivals centered on cultural education and community building. Created as a response to intergenerational bullying and divisions within the Waacking community, Waackfest was designed
as a neutral gathering space where pioneers, leaders, and younger generations could come together to share history, exchange ideas, and strengthen the cultureโs future. Spanning multiple days, the festival brings together international communities through masterclasses, battles, performances, parties, and LGBTQ+ panel discussions led by pioneers and contemporary innovators. At its core, Waackfest is devoted to preserving and evolving the cultural lineages of disco, ballroom, and queer club dance traditions while empowering participants through education, creative expression, and personal development. Over the years, the festival has welcomed legendary figures and cultural leaders including The Icon Javier Ninja, Dashaun Wesley, Steve Notario, Flame, Angel Ceja, Viktor Manoel, Mercury Xtravaganza, Archie Burnett, Mark Starrman, Dallace Zieglar (RIP), Princess Lockerooo, Shae 007, Carlos Fubu Basquiat, the Imperial House of Waacking, P*Fect (Sweden), the House of Ninja (Sweden), the House of Vineyard (Holland), the International House of Artistic Punking, Pangina Heels (Thailand), House of Suraj (India), and The Waackers (USA). Drawing an international community of dancers, artists, and cultural stewards, Waackfest has become a vital platform for honoring dance history while celebrating the freedom, creativity, and resilience at the heart of LGBTQ+ and club dance cultures. More than a festival, it is a living archive - bridging generations and inspiring the future of the culture.
