This weekend we honoured the spirit of Notting Hill Carnival in the U.K. not just as a celebration, but as a living legacy.

Born in the 1960s out of resilience against racial tensions in West London, Carnival was rooted in the Caribbean tradition of freedom festivals vibrant processions of music, masquerade, and food. What started as a small indoor gathering by pioneers like Claudia Jones, often called the “Mother of Carnival,” has grown into Europe’s largest street festival.

The costumes, sound systems, steel pan, and jerk pans on the streets are more than spectacle they’re symbols of resistance, joy, and unity. Carnival is a reminder that Caribbean culture didn’t just survive migration, it transformed London, embedding rhythm, colour, and community into its heart.

At brunch today, every bite of jerk chicken and every beat of soca carries that same spirit — freedom, expression, and togetherness.
